C'etait, a bien parler, ma premiere piece. Sardanapale ne compte pas ou ne compte que pour les blagueurs. Au moment de presenter l'Enfant prodigue je me trouvai fort embarrasse. J'etais un isole, un intrus dans le monde des theatres, et je n'y connaissais personne. Je priai M. Peragallo, agent general de la Societe des auteurs et compositeurs dramatiques, d'entendre mon ouvrage. Il le trouva assez satisfaisant pour s'en occuper. Il me promit d'avoir le directeur du Vaudeville a dejeuner, et que je lui lirais ma piece avant de nous mettre a table. J'attendais depuis longtemps deja et l'espoir que M. Peragallo m'avait donne ne se realisait pas. Je cherchais de tous cotes quelqu'un qui voulut bien prendre mon affaire en main. Je pensai a Sarcey. Je ne le connaissais pas. Je ne l'avais jamais vu. On disait de lui alors qu'il etait tres grossier, pas si bete et bon enfant, avec quelque chose de ridicule qui completait le portrait. J'allai le voir.
