Partendo dall’incontro fra l’ebreo di sinistra Jacob Taubes e il giurista Carl Schmitt, in questa seconda parte del percorso si pongono in questione le radici ebraico-cristiane della teologia politica occidentale. L’antisemitismo è sempre stato in contraddizione con il cristianesimo, che fin dall’inizio ha saputo tradurre la concezione teologico-politica ebraica in termini universali e davvero globali. Mentre la teologia ebraica e quella islamica hanno sempre fondato la politica nella legge rivelata, solo il cristianesimo è sorto dal superamento dell’antico legalismo. L’imperativo cristiano dell’amore del prossimo non è più limitato ad un solo popolo, come accadeva nell’antico Testamento, ma è divenuto per la prima volta universale. Perciò solo la teologia politica cristiana ha consentito di sganciare l’etica dalla morale, vale a dire l’atto dalla regola. Per il cristianesimo, la legge si è tradotta fin dal primo momento nell’imperativo davvero universale e sovra-statale della libertà etica ed individuale della scelta. Perciò Cristo – il Messia Figlio di Dio, re dei cieli, ma non sulla terra – è stato il primo laico, che ha fondato nella fratellanza universale il superamento etico della legge. Non a caso, nel giudizio finale, Cristo afferma che lui stesso – l’unico Giudice – non giudicherà nessuno, perché su ciascuno dei risorti ricadranno i suoi giudizi: si salveranno soltanto coloro che avranno seguito fedelmente il suo “non giudicate”, mentre tutti gli altri saranno condannati per sempre alla “seconda morte” della perdizione. La prospettiva del giudizio, come si vede, non dipende più dalla legge, ma dalla scelta individuale di non applicarla.

La pandemia e la guerra in Ucraina rendono attualissimi i contenuti di questo libro. Infatti, nei periodi in cui crollano le certezze, è particolarmente importante risalire ai princìpi. E la questione di principio che viene qui affrontata è la seguente: in che modo l’esercizio della sovranità può essere realmente democratico, per il fatto di rispettare la libertà dei singoli, senza opprimerli nelle maglie delle concezioni totalitarie dello Stato? La prima parte del libro sfata il mito della globalizzazione, che avrebbe dovuto produrre la pace e diffondere la democrazia, mentre in realtà ha favorito solo una sparuta minoranza di capitalisti, impoverendo la classe media e producendo delle inedite forme di schiavismo. In realtà la globalizzazione non ha prodotto nessuna nuova concezione della sovranità e quindi nessuna nuova scelta politica. Perciò qui si ripropone l’utopia universalistica formulata da Kant nel suo breve testo La pace perpetua – per evitare per sempre le guerre è necessario che tutti gli Stati del pianeta si federino in uno solo – come l’unico modo per assicurare una globalizzazione realmente liberale, fondata su un esercizio concreto della democrazia. La seconda parte del volume riprende la concezione della sovranità proposta da Carl Schmitt. Solo chi non lo ha mai letto può ancora credere che Schmitt abbia dato un contributo al sorgere del nazismo. Egli ha dato invece un contributo essenziale alla comprensione della sovranità in tutte le sue forme giuridiche, perché ha dimostrato che la sovranità e il suo concreto esercizio politico sono necessariamente superiori alla legge: la legittimità si distingue dalla legalità proprio perché la sovranità opera sempre nello “stato d’eccezione”, vale a dire al di sopra dei limiti dello stato costituito.

Lo scientismo moderno, volendo spiegare ogni cosa in termini quantitativi, ha finito per negare la stessa possibilità della libertà della scelta. Ma, se nessuna scelta può essere libera, allora l’etica non si potrà più distinguere dal rispetto d’una legge che non sarà più fondata in nessun atto sovrano, e quindi libero. Lo scientismo ha finito così per elaborare una teoria secondo la quale la mente in nulla si distinguerebbe dall’operatività d’una macchina. L’intelligenza artificiale, che i computer consentono di produrre, aprirebbe così l’orizzonte orwelliano di un universo in tutto dominato dalle macchine. Certo, tutti sappiamo che i computer sono utilissimi, ma semplicemente perché le loro capacità di calcolo sono superiori a quelle della mente. Questo significa che la mente di noi viventi non è solo una macchina, ma anche qualcosa di profondamente diverso, connesso con la vita. Questo qualcosa viene chiamato psiche, come se questa parola, oggi, significasse qualcosa di diverso da quel che ha sempre significato, vale a dire anima. L’anima non è propria solo di noi esseri umani, capaci di parlare e quindi di pensare, ma anche di tutti gli animali – che si chiamano così proprio perché ne hanno una – e forse anche delle piante. La connessione fra la psiche e la vita è così forte che a volte la prima parola, quando interviene in un antico testo greco, dev’essere tradotta con la seconda: avere un’anima significa, semplicemente, vivere. La cibernetica non è stata l’unica scienza moderna a cancellare la vita dalla nostra esperienza, perché anche la psicologia e la psicanalisi hanno troppo spesso seguito questo pericoloso piano inclinato, a causa dell’inconscio, come se il funzionamento di quest’ultimo non si distinguesse in nulla da quello d’una macchina pensante.

These are the opening words of Ernst Bloch's first major work, The Spirit of Utopia, written mostly in 1915-16, published in its first version just after the First World War, republished five years later, 1923, in the version here presented for the first time in English translation. The Spirit of Utopia is one of the great historic books from the beginning of the century, but it is not an obsolete one. In its style of thinking, a peculiar amalgam of biblical, Marxist, and Expressionist turns, in its analytical skills deeply informed by Simmel, taking its information from both Hegel and Schopenhauer for the groundwork of its metaphysics of music but consistently interpreting the cultural legacy in the light of a certain Marxism, Bloch's Spirit of Utopia is a unique attempt to rethink the history of Western civilizations as a process of revolutionary disruptions and to reread the artworks, religions, and philosophies of this tradition as incentives to continue disrupting. The alliance between messianism and Marxism, which was proclaimed in this book for the first time with epic breadth, has met with more critique than acclaim. The expressive and baroque diction of the book was considered as offensive as its stubborn disregard for the limits of "disciplines." Yet there is hardly a "discipline" that didn't adopt, however unknowingly, some of Bloch's insights, and his provocative associations often proved more productive than the statistical account of social shifts. The first part of this philosophical meditation--which is also a narrative, an analysis, a rhapsody, and a manifesto--concerns a mode of "self-encounter" that presents itself in the history of music from Mozart through Mahler as an encounter with the problem of a community to come. This "we-problem" is worked out by Bloch in terms of a philosophy of the history of music. The "self-encounter," however, has to be conceived as "self-invention," as the active, affirmative fight for freedom and social justice, under the sign of Marx. The second part of the book is entitled "Karl Marx, Death and the Apocalypse." I am. We are. That's hardly anything. But enough to start.
