Die Auffassung, dass mit Kultur und Marketing zwei Welten aufeinanderprallen, ist unter Kulturverantwortlichen weit verbreitet. Doch immer mehr Orchester und Opernhäuser in Deutschland entdecken das Marketing, denn einerseits stehen den Kulturanbietern zahlreiche Konkurrenten im Wettbewerb um die Gunst des Publikums gegenüber, andererseits schwindet die traditionelle Kernzielgruppe. Das bestätigen auch Ergebnisse groß angelegter Studien, wie die ARD-E-Musikstudie aus dem Jahr 2005. Die Bereitschaft bei der deutschen Bevölkerung nimmt zusehends ab, ein E-Musikkonzert oder eine Opernaufführung zu besuchen. Darüber hinaus ist eine zunehmende Veralterung und Intellektualisierung des Publikums festzustellen. Kein Wunder, dass es unter Musikjournalisten die Assoziation von „Konzerten am Silbersee“ hervorruft. Insofern besteht die Gefahr, dass E-Musikveranstaltungen immer mehr aus dem Bewusstsein der modernen Erlebnisgesellschaft verschwinden. Eine Herausforderung besteht derzeit darin, einen Teil der Jugend von Kino und Klingeltönen wegzulocken. Daher rückt die nachhaltige und frühzeitige E-Musikvermittlung sowie eine veränderte Aufführungskultur bei vielen Kulturproduzenten immer mehr in den Mittelpunkt, um Zugangsbarrieren und Vorurteile abzubauen. Sie haben erkannt, dass vor allem die junge Generation das Publikum von morgen ist, dessen Bedürfnisse es jedoch heute schon zu wecken gilt. Daneben wird die besucherorientierte Kommunikation immer wichtiger, um der veränderten Anspruchshaltung auch aufgrund des Medienwandels gerecht zu werden. Aus diesen Überlegungen resultiert das Buch. Die Untersuchung analysiert die Entwicklung des Kulturmarketings in Deutschland und stellt diese exemplarisch anhand der Orchesterlandschaft dar. Die daraus gewonnen Erkenntnisse sollen einen konstruktiven Beitrag für die Zukunft des Kulturmarketings, insbesondere für die zielgruppengerechte Kulturkommunikation im Allgemeinen und für den besprochenen Kulturzweig im Speziellen, leisten.

The second half of the eighteenth century witnessed a flourishing of the string quartet, often represented as a smooth and logical progression from first violin-dominated homophony to a more equal conversation between the four voices. Yet this progression was neither as smooth nor as linear as previously thought, as Mara Parker illustrates in her examination of the string quartet during this period. Looking at a wide variety of string quartets by composers such as Pleyel, Distler and Filtz, in addition to Haydn and Mozart, the book proposes a new way of describing the relationships between the four instruments in different works. Broadly speaking, these relationships follow one of four patterns: the 'lecture', the 'polite conversation', the 'debate', and the 'conversation'. In focusing on these musical discourses, it becomes apparent that each work is the product of its composer's stylistic choices, location, intended performers and intended audience. Instead of evolving in a strict and universal sequence, the string quartet in the latter half of the eighteenth century was a complex genre with composers mixing and matching musical discourses as circumstances and their own creative impulses required.
