Unterhalb und neben den Landeskirchen entstanden im 19. Jahrhundert in enger Anlehnung an die burgerliche Vereinsbewegung christliche Verbande, so auch die von Johann Hinrich Wichern (1808-1881) ins Leben gerufene Innere Mission. Sie sollte primar der zunehmenden Entkirchlichung und Sakularisierung begegnen. Wichern hatte erkannt, dass die Kirche sich zu diesem Zweck vor allem sozial engagieren musse. So ist Wichern (kirchen-)historisch neu zu bewerten: Zwar fordert er durch sein Tun soziale Reform und Entstehung des Sozialstaats; beide sind aber Nebenprodukte seines eigentlichen Wollens, die Gesellschaft volksmissionarisch zu durchdringen. Mit dem Instrumentarium der Religionssoziologie zeigt Sturm, dass Wicherns Weg einer religiosen Erneuerung durch Diakonie deshalb erfolgreich und modernitatsfahig war, weil er seine Konzepte konsequent an die besonderen Bedingungen und Moglichkeiten von Religion in der modernen Gesellschaft band. Dabei entwickelte Wichern neue Darstellungsformen der Religion sowie spezifisch religiose Einwirkungsmoglichkeiten im Bereich der sozialen Gestaltung.

Theological work, whatever else it may be, is always a reflection on social transformations. Not only pastors but also theologians work with the sources of the Christian traditions in one hand and a newspaper in the other. But how are we to understand the relationship between social transformations and the continuously “compromised” development of Christian ideals, as these are measured by doctrinal formulations? And how might a more deeply sociological perspective on this relationship inform theological work? Matthew Ryan Robinson and Evan F. Kuehn approach this question, not by reconstructing a history of ideas, but rather by telling a story about the development of churches and theological institutions. They take the turbulent and dynamic ecclesiological situation of nineteenth-century Germany as a representative case, focusing on the sociological methodological orientation of Friedrich Schleiermacher and Ernst Troeltsch in the context of the rise of theological liberalism, the history of religions, and the German churches’ confrontation with social and political challenges. Robinson and Kuehn then connect this orientation with the sociology of religion of Hans Joas and Niklas Luhmann, arguing for a functional focus in theological research on what doctrines do rather than what the reality behind or in any particular doctrine is.

This book focuses on the national conceptualization of Judaism and Jews by German neo-Pietists from the early Restoration (1815) until the New Era (neue Ära, 1858-1861), at which point Prussia and other German states embarked on a liberal course. The book demonstrates how a certain understanding of nationalism by Awakened Christians, who were associated with political conservatism, was applied to themselves as belonging to a German nation, and correspondingly to Jews as members of a distinct Jewish nation. It argues that this kind of nationalization by neo-Pietists–among them theologians, intellectuals, and members of the agrarian aristocracy–was interwoven with their religion of the heart, and drew on a tradition of a community of kinship established by the earlier German Pietism since the late seventeenth century. The book sheds new light on the accommodation of nationalism by German Pietist conservatives, who so far were considered as opponents of the national idea. At the same time, it shows that their posture towards Jews was not merely anti-Semitic. It emerged from a specific religious-national synthesis, and aimed at an alternative solution to the Jewish Question, other than emancipation, in the form of Jewish national political independence.

How churches in Northern Europe reinvented their role as providers of social relief Charity is a word that fits well in the history of religion and churches, whereas the concept of social reform seems to belong more to the vocabulary of the modern welfare states. Christian charity found itself, during the long nineteenth century, within the maelstrom of social turmoil. In this context of social unrest, although charity managed to confirm its relevance, it was also subjected to fierce criticism, as well as to substitute state-run forms of social care and insurance. The history of the welfare states remained all too blind to religion.
