After an atomic detonation renders almost the whole of the Middle East a barren wasteland, world leaders decide to pursue peace. Those who try and stay behind and live violently on Earth are forcibly exiled to space... 300 years pass, and mankind has made great strides in technology. War on Earth is unknown, and even conflict between individuals becomes rare. Mankind has outgrown its need for violence, and the people of Earth have entered into a new, enlightened age. A renaissance with no need for guns or war. What the Earthlings couldn't have anticipated was that they might someday encounter a threat from beyond their world. When a major city is devastated by an alien force from the galaxy's edge, the planet's population finds itself at the mercy of a new and insidious foe. Bereft of weapons and military forces, the Earthlings cannot defend themselves. World peace ain't all it's cracked up to be. The Earthlings have one hope however, and it lies with the star-flung descendents of those exiled to cold space centuries prior. The culture of the nomadic space-farers retains the traditions of human violence. Living in space, relegated to the periphery of human affairs, the space-born have weathered the demands of space over generations and used their resources to develop powerful weapons. The exiled are called upon to save Earth from the alien menace. The space-born are not an organized unit-- like pirates spread out across a vast sea of stars, they are fragmented and tribal. Some among them would meet news of Earth's invasion with indifference, others with glee. When Earth comes calling, only one man heeds the call. His name is Faust, and his command is the Battlecruiser Methuselah.

The book presents an intertextual and comparative analysis of memories of violence in Peruvian and Congolese Literature. Examining a variety of novels that offer insightful representations of violence in their respective historical settings, the author argues that similar historical experiences between Latin America and Africa engender ethical/aesthetic responses and enhance trans-continental critical dialogues in comparative literary studies. In the same way that the drama of the Congo has become the symbolic open wound of (post)colonial dispensation in Africa, Spanish conquest in Latin America also produced spaces where the legacy of colonialism is strongly visible and memorable, providing fertile ground for the reproduction of violence. This book explores the concept and reality of violence beyond its most obvious manifestations, demonstrating how in the colonial contexts of Peru and the Congo, violence was a function of (post)colonial power dynamics and deeply engrained socio-political, economic and cultural ordering and othering. From this perspective, the work considers and re-examines theoretical contributions from authors such as John Galtung, Michel Foucault, Immanuel Wallerstein, Anibal Quijano, Frantz Fanon, Achille Mbembe, Eboussi Boulaga, Pierre Nora, Susan Sontag, Stevan Weine, Cathy Caruth and Nelson Maldonado-Torres. This book investigates the importance of gender and resistance to silences and denials concerning human rights abuses and historical injustices in narratives on transnational memories of three violent conflicts in Indonesia. Transnational memories of violent conflicts travel abroad with politicians, postcolonial migrants and refugees. This book explores how recent Colombian historical memories are informed by cultural diversity and how some of the country’s citizens remember the brutalities committed by the Army, guerrillas, and paramilitaries during the internal war (1980-2016). Its chapters delve into four case studies. The first highlights the selections of what not to remember and what not to represent at the National Museum of the country. The second focuses on the well-received memories at the same institution by examining a display made to commemorate the assassination of a demobilized guerrilla fighter. The third discusses how a rural marginal community decided to vividly remember the attacks they experienced by creating a display hall to aid in their collective and individual healing. Lastly, the fourth case study, also about a rural peripheric community, discusses their way of remembering, which emphasizes peasant oral traditions through a traveling venue. All industrialization is deeply rooted within the specific geographies in which it took place, and echoes of previous industrialization continue to reverberate in these places through to the modern day. This book takes the urban space as a starting point for thinking about practices, actors, narratives, and imaginations within articulations of memory. The social protests and mobilizations against colonial statues are examples of how past injustice and violence keep on shaping debates in the present. Following an interdisciplinary approach, the contributions to this book focus on the in/visibility and affective power of monuments and traces through political, activist, and artistic contestations in different geographical settings. They show that memories are shaped in contact zones, most often in conflict and within hierarchical social relations.
