Special Education and Globalization illustrates the way in which inclusive education has become the dominant discourse across Europe and the wider international context. Contributions to this book highlight the tensions evident within each jurisdiction, related to the construction of disability within specific historical and cultural antecedents. These tensions often involve the relationship between official policy discourses and grassroots practices based on the assumptions of classroom practitioners who may have strong views on individual deficits. Parents and voluntary organisations may also have an interest in asserting the ‘specialness’ of specific conditions which require provision outside the mainstream. Finally, the emergence of new bureaucratic structures in an era of heightened national and individual competition often run counter to the ethos of co-operation which informs inclusive practice. This book was originally published as a special issue of Discourse: Studies in the Cultural Politics of Education.

The global trend in educational participation has brought with it a cross-national consequence: the expansion of students with "special needs" (SEN) placed in special education and the growth of "low achieving" students diverted to vocational tracks. This book explores the global expansion of special and vocational education as a highly variable event, not only across nations of considerable economic, political and cultural difference, but between nations with evident similarities as well. The Global Convergence of Vocational and Special Education analyzes how the concept of secular benevolence underscores the divergent and convergent trajectories that vocational and special education have taken across the globe. The authors embrace national differences as the means to observe two dicta of comparative research: similar origins can result in very different outcomes, and similar outcomes can be the result of very different origins.

Education And Social Justice In The Era Of Globalisation written by Marie Lall and has been published by Taylor & Francis this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2020-11-29 with Education categories.

The book discusses the implications of globalization on education from the perspective of social justice. It looks at two countries — India and the UK — to look at how global economic and cultural processes are mediated through nation states, institutional structures and the aspirations of different social groups. It seeks to resituate the debates around education and social justice in policy, research and public discourse by highlighting the need for a more nuanced understanding of globalization and education. It also demonstrates the effects of economic dimensions — the politics of neoliberalism, and how this has shifted the understanding of state responsibilities and marginalized issues pertaining to the agenda of social justice.

Elite Schools In Globalising Circumstances written by Jane Kenway and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2017-10-02 with Education categories.

Elite Schools in Globalizing Circumstances foregrounds the richly theoretical and empirically-based work of an international cast of scholars seeking to break out of the confines of the methodological nationalism that now governs so much of contemporary scholarship on schooling. Based on a 5-year extended global ethnography of elite schools in nine different countries—countries defined by colonial pasts linked to England—the contributors make a powerful case for the rethinking of elite schools and elite class formation theory in light of contemporary processes of globalization and transnational change. Prestigious, high-status schools have long been seen as critical institutional vehicles directly contributing to the societal processes of elite selection and reproduction. This book asserts that much has changed and that these schools can no longer rest on their past laurels and accomplishments. Instead they must re-cast their heritages and tradition in order to navigate the new globally competitive educational field enabling them to succeed in a world in which the globalization of educational markets, the global ambitions and imaginations of school youth, and the emergence of new powerful players peddling entrepreneurial models of curriculum and education, have placed contemporary schooling under tremendous pressure. This insightful and though-provoking volume provides a well-researched perspective on the nature of contemporary schooling in the globalizing era. This book was originally published as a special issue of Globalisation, Societies and Education.

To say that the world is getting smaller and smaller may well be a truism, but evidence of this can be experienced every day, not only at international conferences, but in the familiar spaces of our everyday lives. Globalisation as a phenomenon is not new; we only need to look at Greek and Roman histories for examples of the ways in which cultures and languages have the capacity to spread across vast areas, though similar examples can be found across the world. More recently, other empires grew, many spreading from Europe to colonise and influence peoples with their own rich histories. Such global developments brought with them benefits for some and problems for others, and such a pattern of benefits and problems has continued in more recent manifestations of globalisation, characterised by speed and extent of movement, and interpreted in different ways according to where the locus of power is situated. Many find themselves caught up in the maelstrom that globalisation inevitably produces, especially when it is caught up with international political and global developments. The concept of 'migratory movements' as a characteristic of globalisation conjures up both hope and despair, depending on the reasons people have for moving and the possibility or impossibility of having a choice in whether they move or not. Opportunities to 'gain' other languages, as a plurilingual individual or a multilingual community, need also to be considered in the face of potential language 'loss' or even language death, where particular languages are preceived as having low status and little value.Global shifts have an enormous impact on local practices and cultures, and they bring with them significant implications for the development of language practices and policies. In order to stay afloat when confronted by ongoing, rapid and complex changes, not only in available knowledge, but also in communities, cultures, circumstances, needs, challenges and opportunities, new approaches to education, including curricula and pedagogies, need to be imagined and developed. In this book, such educational, pedagogical and policy imperatives are framed within the context of a 'deep'' approach and explored specifically through its implications for language education.
