To say that the world is getting smaller and smaller may well be a truism, but evidence of this can be experienced every day, not only at international conferences, but in the familiar spaces of our everyday lives. Globalisation as a phenomenon is not new; we only need to look at Greek and Roman histories for examples of the ways in which cultures and languages have the capacity to spread across vast areas, though similar examples can be found across the world. More recently, other empires grew, many spreading from Europe to colonise and influence peoples with their own rich histories. Such global developments brought with them benefits for some and problems for others, and such a pattern of benefits and problems has continued in more recent manifestations of globalisation, characterised by speed and extent of movement, and interpreted in different ways according to where the locus of power is situated. Many find themselves caught up in the maelstrom that globalisation inevitably produces, especially when it is caught up with international political and global developments. The concept of 'migratory movements' as a characteristic of globalisation conjures up both hope and despair, depending on the reasons people have for moving and the possibility or impossibility of having a choice in whether they move or not. Opportunities to 'gain' other languages, as a plurilingual individual or a multilingual community, need also to be considered in the face of potential language 'loss' or even language death, where particular languages are preceived as having low status and little value.Global shifts have an enormous impact on local practices and cultures, and they bring with them significant implications for the development of language practices and policies. In order to stay afloat when confronted by ongoing, rapid and complex changes, not only in available knowledge, but also in communities, cultures, circumstances, needs, challenges and opportunities, new approaches to education, including curricula and pedagogies, need to be imagined and developed. In this book, such educational, pedagogical and policy imperatives are framed within the context of a 'deep'' approach and explored specifically through its implications for language education.

The challenges posed by globalization for languages, policies and education form the basis of this collection of selected doubly-blind peer-reviewed articles, which have been put together following the 2014 PLIDAM conference on “Policies and Ideologies in Language Teaching: Actors and discourses”. The chapters collected in this volume revolve around the topic of globalization, which we understand to be a blend of ideas covered by at least four meanings: (1) internationalization, in reference to the growing interdependence and transactions between countries; (2) liberalization, which has to do with the forming of an ‘open’ and ‘borderless’ world economy; (3) universalization of certain phenomena around the world; and (4) westernization, with an emphasis on the influence of Western values (gender equality, freedom of speech and other ideas inspired by the West) over the rest of the world. The four broad themes that the chapters are organised into are (I) Policies in Language Teaching and Learning; (II) Language Policy, Ideology and Minority Languages; (III) Language Teaching and Learning across Cultures; (IV) Language Teaching and Learning with Technology. Contributing to the knowledge, discussion and debate about the impact that globalization has had on languages, policies and education in a wide variety of contexts, we hope that this book will be useful and informative to language researchers, policy makers and anyone with an interest in the intersecting field between languages, policies and education.

This volume inserts the place of the local in theorizing about language policies and practices in applied linguistics. While the effects of globalization around the world are being discussed in such diverse circles as corporations, law firms, and education, and while the spread of English has come to largely benefit those in positions of power, relatively little has been said about the impact of globalization at the local level, directly or indirectly. Reclaiming the Local in Language Policy and Practice is unique in focusing specifically on the outcomes of globalization in and among the communities affected by these changes. The authors make a case for why it is important for local social practices, communicative conventions, linguistic realities, and knowledge paradigms to actively inform language policies and practices for classrooms and communities in specific contexts, and to critically inform those pertaining to other communities. Engaging with the dominant paradigms in the discipline of applied linguistics, the chapters include research relating to second language acquisition, sociolinguistics, literacy, and language planning. The majority of chapters are case studies of specific contexts and communities, focused on situations of language teaching. Beyond their local contexts these studies are important for initiating discussion of their relevance for other, different communities and contexts. Taken together, the chapters in this book approach the task of reclaiming and making space for the local by means of negotiating with the present and the global. They illuminate the paradox that the local contains complex values of diversity, multilingualism, and plurality that can help to reconceive the multilingual society and education for postmodern times.
