Winner of the Competition “Prize for PhD Thesis 2023” arranged by Sapienza University Press. Since the turn of the millennium, there has been growing interest in the study of non-self-adjoint operators in Quantum Mechanics, driven by both their physical relevance and mathematical challenges. The first part of this book focuses on the spectral theory of non-selfadjoint operators, particularly the Dirac operators, and the confinement of their eigenvalues within compact regions of the complex plane. The second part shifts to the study of nonlinear hyperbolic equations with time-dependent coefficients and small initial data, exploring blowup phenomena, critical exponents, and lifespan estimates.

Computer ontologies have gained particular importance in current research. They play a fundamental role in the organisation of data and, therefore, of the knowledge that forms the basis for defining any intervention in the field of cultural heritage. To ensure effective interoperability and greater efficiency, these formalizations must not be disconnected from each other but rather well structured according to the different domains of interest. For this reason, it was decided to develop the CPM (Conservation Process Modelling) ontology, dedicated to the restoration of historic buildings, closely related to CIDOC CRM, the most established ontology in the field of material historical heritage. he book consists of three distinct sections, linked by their common focus on defining ontologies suitable for formalising historical cultural heritage issues, with particular reference to architecture. The first part is devoted to the complete formulation of version 1.0 of the CPM. The second presents some examples of concrete applications of the CPM, including the modelling of the Risk Map for historic centres. Finally, the third deals with the broader spectrum of digitisation in the field of tangible cultural heritage, paying particular attention to the CIDOC CRM ontology and to the debate on digitisation in the field of architectural restoration.

Winner of the Competition “Prize for PhD Thesis 2023” arranged by Sapienza University Press. From infancy to adulthood, touch shapes our understanding of self and others, influencing social interactions and emotional bonds. This work delves into the embodied nature of pleasant social touch. Through a series of innovative studies, the author investigates how social context and body location affect touch preferences in typically developing and autistic adults, as well as the influence of virtual body ownership on social touch perception. The thesis also explores the role of embodied simulation in empathy for pleasant touch and examines motor facilitation effects during the observation of others’ tactile experiences. Furthermore, it proposes a potential link between empathy for pleasant touch and prosocial behaviour. By combining cutting-edge techniques with established experimental paradigms, this thesis offers insights into the intricate relationship between touch, body representations, and social cognition. From exploring the roots of touch processing difficulties in autism spectrum disorders to uncovering the neural mechanisms underlying positive empathy, this work bridges crucial gaps in our understanding of social touch. Whether you’re a researcher in neuroscience and psychology, or simply curious about the power of human touch, this thesis provides a comprehensive and thoughtprovoking exploration of how our tactile experiences shape our social world. Discover the embodied phenomenon of pleasant social touch and its implications for human interaction.

Winner of the Competition “Prize for PhD Thesis 2023” arranged by Sapienza University Press. Integral abutment bridges are bridges characterised by a monolithic connection between the deck and the abutments. Therefore, their behaviour during a seismic event is controlled by the interaction of the entire structure with the surrounding soil, and markedly with the approach embankment. Despite becoming a popular design due to low maintenance requirements, seismic design procedures still face uncertainties due to limited understanding of the dynamic soil-structure response.

Winner of the Competition “Prize for PhD Thesis 2023” arranged by Sapienza University Press. Black holes are the most compact objects in the Universe. According to general relativity, black holes have a horizon that hides a singularity where Einstein’s theory breaks down. Recently, gravitational waves have opened the possibility of probing the existence of horizons and investigating the nature of compact objects. This is particularly interesting given some quantum-gravity models which predict the presence of horizonless and singularity-free compact objects. This thesis derives the gravitational-wave signal emitted by horizonless compact objects for model-independent tests of the black hole paradigm.

One Step Beyond The Hero written by Giorgio Mariani and has been published by Sapienza Università Editrice this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2025-03-26 with Literary Collections categories.

The essays collected in this volume were written over the last twenty or so years and were all originally published (with one exception) in a variety of journals and edited collections. The topics covered range from contemporary Native American literature to war literature and cinema, from the revisionist Western film to the prose of Ralph Waldo Emerson and other writers who struggled to think of peace as something different from the peace that can be safeguarded by an unending preparedness for war. As a whole, this book attempts to gauge to what extent both film and narrative can point in the direction of that “one step beyond the hero” which Emerson (in his early years) saw as necessary to becoming true peace fighters. Though “One Step Beyond the Hero” shows how difficult it is to imagine (let alone realize) a world free of violence, brutality, and coercion, its goal is not to undermine the Utopian desire for a non-violent future. On the contrary, by calling attention to how writers and filmmakers deal with both violence and war, this study engages in a critical scrutiny of culture based on the notion that peace should be another word for justice.

Inverse Scattering Problems and Their Applications to Nonlinear Integrable Equations, Second Edition is devoted to inverse scattering problems (ISPs) for differential equations and their applications to nonlinear evolution equations (NLEEs). The book is suitable for anyone who has a mathematical background and interest in functional analysis, differential equations, and equations of mathematical physics. This book is intended for a wide community working with ISPs and their applications. There is an especially strong traditional community in mathematical physics. In this monograph, the problems are presented step-by-step, and detailed proofs are given for considered problems to make the topics more accessible for students who are approaching them for the first time. New to the Second Edition All new chapter dealing with the Bäcklund transformations between a common solution of both linear equations in the Lax pair and the solution of the associated IBVP for NLEEs on the half-line Updated references and concluding remarks Features Solving the direct and ISP, then solving the associated initial value problem (IVP) or initial-boundary value problem (IBVP) for NLEEs are carried out step-by-step. The unknown boundary values are calculated with the help of the Lax (generalized) equations, then the time-dependent scattering data (SD) are expressed in terms of preassigned initial and boundary conditions. Thereby, the potential functions are recovered uniquely in terms of the given initial and calculated boundary conditions. The unique solvability of the ISP is proved and the SD of the scattering problem is described completely. The considered ISPs are well-solved. The ISPs are set up appropriately for constructing the Bӓckhund transformations (BTs) for solutions of associated IBVPs or IVPs for NLEEs. The procedure for finding a BT for the IBVP for NLEEs on the half-line differs from the one used for obtaining a BT for non-linear differential equations defined in the whole space. The interrelations between the ISPs and the constructed BTs are established to become new powerful unified transformations (UTs) for solving IBVPs or IVPs for NLEEs, that can be used in different areas of physics and mechanics. The application of the UTs is consistent and efficiently embedded in the scheme of the associated ISP.

Self Adjoint Extension Schemes And Modern Applications To Quantum Hamiltonians written by Matteo Gallone and has been published by Springer Nature this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2023-04-04 with Science categories.

This book introduces and discusses the self-adjoint extension problem for symmetric operators on Hilbert space. It presents the classical von Neumann and Krein–Vishik–Birman extension schemes both in their modern form and from a historical perspective, and provides a detailed analysis of a range of applications beyond the standard pedagogical examples (the latter are indexed in a final appendix for the reader’s convenience). Self-adjointness of operators on Hilbert space representing quantum observables, in particular quantum Hamiltonians, is required to ensure real-valued energy levels, unitary evolution and, more generally, a self-consistent theory. Physical heuristics often produce candidate Hamiltonians that are only symmetric: their extension to suitably larger domains of self-adjointness, when possible, amounts to declaring additional physical states the operator must act on in order to have a consistent physics, and distinct self-adjoint extensions describe different physics. Realising observables self-adjointly is the first fundamental problem of quantum-mechanical modelling. The discussed applications concern models of topical relevance in modern mathematical physics currently receiving new or renewed interest, in particular from the point of view of classifying self-adjoint realisations of certain Hamiltonians and studying their spectral and scattering properties. The analysis also addresses intermediate technical questions such as characterising the corresponding operator closures and adjoints. Applications include hydrogenoid Hamiltonians, Dirac–Coulomb Hamiltonians, models of geometric quantum confinement and transmission on degenerate Riemannian manifolds of Grushin type, and models of few-body quantum particles with zero-range interaction. Graduate students and non-expert readers will benefit from a preliminary mathematical chapter collecting all the necessary pre-requisites on symmetric and self-adjoint operators on Hilbert space (including the spectral theorem), and from a further appendix presenting the emergence from physical principles of the requirement of self-adjointness for observables in quantum mechanics.
