Si dice che le categorie del Novecento non siano in grado di capire il presente. Falso. Solo il Novecento ci fa capire il dopo; solo chi lo ha attraversato e sofferto, tutto intero, può interpretare il presente con strumenti affilati. Mario Tronti, che il xx secolo l’ha vissuto da protagonista intellettuale – da marxista eretico – e ne è uscito sconfitto, non ha rinunciato all’esigenza, e al dovere, di capire. Oggi la libertà di pensiero è garantita, ma non è concesso un pensiero di libertà: il capitale ha conquistato tutto il mondo, e così è arrivato a conquistare anche tutto l’uomo. Non solo trattato di filosofia politica, Dello spirito libero è anche e soprattutto un capolavoro di resistenza: un’opera composta di frammenti, perché «non si può ormai pensare e scrivere che per frammenti, essendo esploso il mondo di ieri in mille pezzi».
