This book recounts the entangled stories of three distinctly Russian movements—state ideology, Russian cosmism, and Eurasianism—from their inception at the end of the nineteenth century and beginning of the twentieth century until now. Despite harboring pseudoscientific and mystical ideas specific to Russia, all three movements were propagated by their followers as “universal sciences,” and all three vied for scientific supremacy and universal acceptance. Suppressed by the Bolsheviks and their state ideology as “unscientific” in the 1920s, Russian cosmism and Eurasianism led an esoteric underground existence during the Soviet period and re-emerged in the dying years of the Soviet Union, seeking not only to reclaim their “scientific” status but also to potentially fill the perplexing vacuum left by the ensuing demise of Soviet state ideology. This study relates the post-Soviet search for a new state ideology, or new National Idea, at the federal and regional levels, based on the Kremlin’s projects and the case of the ethnic Republic of Kalmykia in south-west Russia.

Dilain pihak, pada abad ini pula, munculnya sejumlah kekhawatiran umat manusia terhadap problem lingkungan, yang mengancam keberlangsungan masa depan umat manusia. Para ahli berpendapat, bahwa krisis lingkungan menjadi semakin masif disebabkan adanya campur tangan manusia yang berlangsung cukup lama, setidaknya ketika nenek moyang manusia menemukan api dan bermigrasi menyebar ke seluruh dunia. Tanda-tanda inilah disebut sebagai era antroposen, yakni skala waktu geologi dengan menempatkan manusia sebagai penanda, hal ini dengan alasan bahwa aktivitas manusia telah secara tidak langsung ikut andil dalam perubahan bumi. Dari historiografi inilah yang menyebabkan akumulasi krisis lingkungan itu membengkak pada era modern. Namun, pada beberapa abad ini, kesadaran manusia akan ancaman lingkungan mulai terbentuk. Cerminan ini terlihat dari munculnya berbagai paradigma dan gerakan dalam upaya dalam mengatasi ancaman krisis lingkungan tersebut, setidaknya ada dua arus besar yakni : Gerakan hijau yang memfokuskan pada mitigasi (naturalis) , dan gerakan transhumanisme yang memfokuskan pada adaptasi (trans-naturalis). Yang masing-masing menurut wacana transhumanisme sebagai bio konservatif untuk merujuk pada kelompok naturalis dan bio progresif merujuk pada kelompok trans-naturalis. Transhumanisme sebagai bagian dari kelompok trans-naturalis di dasarkan pada visi masa depan posthuman, dimana gerakan-gerakan transhumanisme menyarankan bentuk bio-transformasi secara radikal melalui menerapan berbagai teknologi modern.

In recent years sociologists of sciences have become more interested in scien tific elites, in the way they direct and control the development of sciences and, beyond that, in which the organization of research facilities and resources generally affects research strategies and goals. In this volume we focus on scientific establishments and hierarchies as a means of bringing aspects of these concerns together in their historical and comparative contexts. These terms draw attention to the fact that much scientific work has been pursued within a highly specific organizational setting, that of universities and aca demic research institutes. The effects of this organizational setting as well as its power relations, and its resources in relation to governmental and other non-scientific establishments in society at large, deserve closer attention. One significant aspect of scientific establishments and hierarchies and of the power relations impinging upon scientific research, is the fact that the bulk of leading scientists have the professional career, qualifications and status of a professor. As heads or senior members of departments, institutes and laboratories, professors form the ruling groups of scientific work. They are the main defenders of scientific - or departmental - autonomy, accept or resist innovations in their field, play a leading part in fighting scientific controversies or establishing consensus. Even where research units are not directly controlled by professors, authority structures usually remain strongly hierarchical. These hierarchies too deserve attention in any explora tion of the social characteristics of scientific knowledge and its production.
