Emotionally broken. Mentally drained. Anxiety riddled and devoid of hope. The trauma bond that ties you to your abuser seems unbreakable. Stockholm syndrome, otherwise known as trauma bonding, is a powerful yet poisonous emotional symptom of a toxic relationship. We are treated horrifically by our partner, yet we find ourselves doing everything in our power to maintain the relationship. We are frequently lied to, manipulated, called names, and often physically abused. Still, a life without our abuser isn't something we can bear to imagine. Do we know we're being treated abhorrently? Yes. Does it hurt like nothing else in the world? Yes. Do we actively try to cling to the relationship and make it work? Also, yes. These are symptoms of Stockholm syndrome. But, it doesn't need to be this way. The bond can be broken. I've endured the depths of an abusive relationship, and found myself chained to my abuser by the invisible - but incredibly tight - handcuffs of Stockholm syndrome. Despite many attempts at leaving only to return in the hope things would change, I couldn't seem to tear myself away from the very relationship that was eroding my self-esteem and my sanity. But, it can be done. In this book, I'll use my own thirteen-year long story and the lessons I've learned along the way to guide you through breaking the trauma bond: - I'll explain the cycle of abuse and how the abuser works to keep us repeating the cycle - I'll cover the reasons we stay in a toxic relationship, other than just love and the deep emotional attachment we have - I'll explain the PTSD symptoms we're prone to suffer as a result of the trauma of abuse - I'll help you unlearn learned helplessness - And, I'll discuss breaking the trauma bond and emotioanlydealing with the aftermath Even if you think the bond is unbreakable, or you can't imagine willfully breaking the invisible chains, knowing more about the attachment to your abuser puts you in a better position to free yourself. This book, created through years of first-hand experience and subsequent research, is for those enduring manipulative, hurtful abuse at the hands of their partner. If you feel like you're stuck and you couldn't ever leave your abuser, this book is for you.

A selection of insights into the relationship between men and women Have you wondered: Why women are more sympathetic than men toward O. J. Simpson? Why women were no more supportive of the Equal Rights Amendment than men? Why women are no more likely than men to support a female political candidate? Why women are no more likely than men to embrace feminism—a movement by, about, and for women? Why some women stay with men who abuse them? Loving to Survive addresses just these issues and poses a surprising answer. Likening women's situation to that of hostages, Dee L. R. Graham and her co- authors argue that women bond with men and adopt men's perspective in an effort to escape the threat of men's violence against them. Dee Graham's announcement, in 1991, of her research on male-female bonding was immediately followed by a national firestorm of media interest. Her startling and provocative conclusion was covered in dozens of national newspapers and heatedly debated. In Loving to Survive, Graham provides us with a complete account of her remarkable insights into relationships between men and women. In 1973, three women and one man were held hostage in one of the largest banks in Stockholm by two ex-convicts. These two men threatened their lives, but also showed them kindness. Over the course of the long ordeal, the hostages came to identify with their captors, developing an emotional bond with them. They began to perceive the police, their prospective liberators, as their enemies, and their captors as their friends, as a source of security. This seemingly bizarre reaction to captivity, in which the hostages and captors mutually bond to one another, has been documented in other cases as well, and has become widely known as Stockholm Syndrome. The authors of this book take this syndrome as their starting point to develop a new way of looking at male-female relationships. Loving to Survive considers men's violence against women as crucial to understanding women's current psychology. Men's violence creates ever-present, and therefore often unrecognized, terror in women. This terror is often experienced as a fear for any woman of rape by any man or as a fear of making any man angry. They propose that women's current psychology is actually a psychology of women under conditions of captivitythat is, under conditions of terror caused by male violence against women. Therefore, women's responses to men, and to male violence, resemble hostages' responses to captors. Loving to Survive explores women's bonding to men as it relates to men's violence against women. It proposes that, like hostages who work to placate their captors lest they kill them, women work to please men, and from this springs women's femininity. Femininity describes a set of behaviors that please men because they communicate a woman's acceptance of her subordinate status. Thus, feminine behaviors are, in essence, survival strategies. Like hostages who bond to their captors, women bond to men in an effort to survive. This is a book that will forever change the way we look at male-female relationships and women's lives.

Tackling relationships, career, and family issues, John Kim, LMFT, thinks of himself as a life-styledesigner, not a therapist. His radical new approach, that he sometimes calls “self-help in a shot glass” is easy, real, and to the point. He helps people make changes to their lives so that personal growth happens organically, just by living. Let’s face it, therapy is a luxury. Few of us have the time or money to devote to going to an office every week. With anecdotes illustrating principles in action (in relatable and sometimes irreverent fashion) and stand-alone practices and exercises, Kim gives readers the tools and directions to focus on what's right with them instead of what's wrong. When John Kim was going through the end of a relationship, he began blogging as The Angry Therapist, documenting his personal journey post-divorce. Traditional therapists avoid transparency, but Kim preferred the language of "me too" as opposed to "you should." He blogged about his own shortcomings, revelations, views on relationships, and the world. He spoke a different therapeutic language —open, raw, and at times subversive — and people responded. The Angry Therapist blog, that inspired this book, has been featured in The Atlantic Monthly and on NPR.

A rollicking account of the bizarre hostage drama that gave rise to the term "Stockholm syndrome." On the morning of August 23, 1973, a man wearing a wig, makeup, and a pair of sunglasses walked into the main branch of Sveriges Kreditbank, a prominent bank in central Stockholm. He ripped out a submachine gun, fired it into the ceiling, and shouted, "The party starts!" This was the beginning of a six-day hostage crisis—and media circus—that would mesmerize the world, drawing into its grip everyone from Sweden’s most notorious outlaw to the prime minister himself. As policemen and reporters encircled the bank, the crime-in-progress turned into a high-stakes thriller broadcast on live television. Inside the building, meanwhile, complicated emotional relationships developed between captors and captives that would launch a remarkable new concept into the realm of psychology, hostage negotiation, and popular culture. Based on a wealth of previously unpublished sources, including rare film footage and unprecedented access to the main participants, Six Days in August captures the surreal events in their entirety, on an almost minute-by-minute basis. It is a rich human drama that blurs the lines between loyalty and betrayal, obedience and defiance, fear and attraction—and a groundbreaking work of nonfiction that forces us to consider "Stockholm syndrome" in an entirely new light.

STOCKHOLM SYNDROME - Bonding with Captors: True Stories of a Psychological Phenomenon In the spring of 1998, a ten year old girl was abducted on her way to school by two men in Donaustadt, Vienna. She was held captive by a sexual predator for eight years before finally making a daring, impromptu escape from her makeshift prison in her captor's cellar. When she heard the news that her former captor had committed suicide, she mourned his loss as though she were grieving the death of an old friend. In the fall of 2001, a British journalist was captured by Islamic terrorists and held captive for eleven days at their compound in Afghanistan. During her ordeal, she rightly believed that any moment could be her last. Terrorist prisoners rarely ever see freedom again following their capture, so when they uncharacteristically agreed to release her from captivity, she immediately fled home without hesitation. Upon her arrival on home soil, she converted from Christianity to Islam as a way to honour those who held her hostage. These bizarre instances, whilst rare, are a psychological phenomenon known as Stockholm syndrome. It is a trope we've seen in movies and TV shows a thousand times before. A beautiful women will be taken prisoner by hostile forces, only for a genuine affection between hostage and captor to manifest. Usually, there is an underlying narrative in these types of stories which always result in good triumphing over evil, perhaps in the form of the hostile captor seeing the error of his ways and setting his prisoner free. Or, in some stories, the hostage is simply manipulating their captor in order to aid their eventual escape. However, the reality of these circumstances is never quite so simple.

Some really great books just keep getting better! For seventeen years The Betrayal Bond has been the primary source for therapists and patients wrestling the effects of emotional pain and harm caused by exploitation from someone they trusted. Divorce, litigation, incest and child abuse, domestic violence, kidnapping, professional exploitation and religious abuse are all areas of trauma bonding. These are situations and relationships of incredible intensity or importance lend themselves more easily to an exploitation of trust or power. In The Betrayal Bond, Dr. Carnes presents an in-depth study of these relationships; why they form, who is most susceptible, and how they become so powerful. Dr. Carnes also gives a clear explanation of the bond that compels people to tolerate the intolerable, and for the first time, maps out the brain connection that makes being with hurtful people comparable to 'a drug of choice.' Most importantly, Carnes provides practical steps to identify compulsive attachment patterns and ultimately to change or end them for good. This new edition includes: New science for understanding how our brains can make a prison of bad relationships New assessments and insights based on 50,000 research participants A new section utilizing the latest findings in attachment research and narrative therapy to concretely rewrite and rescript bad experiences A redefinition of the factors contributing to addictive relationships
