This volume proposes a rich corpus of papers about the 'Other City', a subject only few times dealt with, but worthy of all our attention: it imposes itself on the scene of international modern and contemporary historiography for its undeniable topicality. Throughout history, the city has always had to deal with social 'otherness', i.e. with class privileges and, consequently, with discrimination and marginalization of minorities, of the less well-off, of foreigners, in short, with the differences in status, culture, religion. So that the urban fabric has ended up structuring itself also in function of those inequalities, as well as of the strategic places for the exercise of power, of the political, military or social control, of the spaces for imprisonment, for the sanitary isolation or for the 'temporary' remedy to the catastrophes. From the first portraits of cities, made and diffused at the beginning of the fifteenth century for political exaltation purposes or for religious propaganda and for devotional purposes, which often, through increasingly refined graphic techniques, distort or even deny the true urban image, we reach, at the dawn of contemporary history, the new meaning given by scientific topography and new methods of representation; these latter aimed at revealing the structure and the urban landscape in their objectivity, often unexpected for who had known the city through the filter of 'regime' iconography. The representation of the urban image still shows the contradictions of a community that sometimes includes and even exalts the diversities, other times rejects them, showing the unease of a difficult integration.

Con aggiornamenti, modifiche e alcune assenze questo testo raccoglie gli interventi del convegno “Costruire in Terra d’Otranto tra Medioevo ed Età moderna”, che si è svolto a Lecce dall’11 al 13 luglio 2019 nella sede dell’ex Ospedale dello Spirito Santo. Gli atti si pongono come un utile contributo alla conoscenza del cantiere di Terra d’Otranto, fra lettura archeologica, artistica, architettonica e urbana. I saggi riguardano in particolare le caratteristiche del cantiere medievale di Terra d’Otranto e della sua organizzazione e con riferimento ad aspetti peculiari del linguaggio architettonico proprio di alcune costruzioni, come ad esempio la basilica di Centoporte a Giurdignano e la basilica di S. Caterina d’Alessandria a Galatina. La continuità della tradizione costruttiva, evidente nella ‘lunga durata’ della realizzazione della tecnica muraria a ‘filari isometrici’, viene articolata negli sviluppi del linguaggio architettonico proprio delle opere del cantiere moderno Cinque-Seicentesco, nei sistemi voltati fra XVI e XVII secolo e delle strutture voltate a spigolo e catini con costoloni e ancora delle volte delle chiese leccesi studiate nella loro geometria e morfometria. Completano il quadro alcuni saggi sulle finiture delle facciate delle architetture in Terra d’Otranto, sulle tecniche di intervento del XVIII secolo a seguito e a prevenzione di futuri eventi sismici nel Salento e il caso emblematico per molti degli aspetti citati del castello di Fulcignano a Galatone.

The word conservation, when used in the context of the preservation of built heritage, implies an intrinsically complex concept that evolved over time, since it has been influenced by the perception of history throughout time. This volume emphasises why an understanding of the cultural evolution of the conservation approach must be considered a prerequisite for architects and engineers if they are to cooperate in full harmony with historic-artistic culture for the preservation of global built heritage. In particular, the volume highlights how, during the second half of the last century, the preservation process also involved engineering – the science of making practical applications of knowledge – which, for a long time, made an uncritical use of techniques and materials and devised interventions on historical heritage that were heavily invasive. The volume also devotes special attention to the problems related to seismic risk, to which Italy, Greece and Portugal are particularly prone. Problems that emerge during the crisis and reconstruction phases are dealt with in detail, as is scheduled maintenance, as this latter approach always constitutes an improvement in the performance of the monument and is the most appropriate tool for the conservation of the built heritage. Finally, the volume collects examples of building restoration with case studies of many outstanding monuments. The work will appeal to professionals and academics in the broader fields of civil engineering (both geotechnical and structural engineering), architecture, art history, the history of architecture, restoration and cultural heritage management. Il saggio ha inteso ripercorrere la storia economica della Sicilia dall’invasione normanna fino ad oggi allo scopo di evidenziarne i più salienti momenti evolutivi che si sono verificati sia durante la permanenza del feudalesimo, che dopo la sua abolizione avvenuta nel 1812. Le vicende del periodo preunitario evidenziano il brutale passaggio all’economia latifondistica con quelle connotazioni feudali che impediscono la libera coltivazione della terra. Tali connotazioni saranno dure a morire nell’età postunitaria, riuscendo persino a resistere durante il regime fascista che fece vani tentativi per smantellare il latifondismo. Soltanto l’introduzione del suffragio universale, successivo alla Seconda guerra mondiale e la riforma agraria del 1950, riusciranno a debellare il latifondismo ma non riusciranno ad incidere sulla mentalità clientelare dei siciliani della quale si alimenterà la delinquenza organizzata che, nonostante le battaglie condotte dalla magistratura, riuscirà ad infiltrarsi nella struttura economica dell’Isola.
