La letteratura ungherese ha una ricca tradizione che risale a secoli fa e ha prodotto molti autori di rilievo. La grande letteratura ungherese non è quella che celebra lo splendore di un'Ungheria eroica, ma quella che denuncia la miseria ed il buio del destino ungherese. [...] La letteratura magiara è una folta antologia di queste ferite, di questa sensazione di abbandono e di solitudine che induce gli ungheresi a sentirsi, come dice una lirica di Attila József, «seduti sull'orlo dell'universo». Claudio Magris Cosmo Pasciuto è nato a Formia il 28 marzo 1972. Vive a Gaeta ed insegna Italiano e Latino presso l'Istituto Superiore Teodosio Rossi di Priverno. Ha conseguito la laurea in Lettere, presso L'Università degli Studi di Roma "La Sapienza". Dopo aver perfezionato lo studio della Letteratura si è appassionato alla Filosofia, in particolar modo ad Hegel e all'idealismo tedesco. Appassionato soprattutto di lingue classiche ha perfezionato le sue conoscenze linguistiche moderne per il Francese (ha pubblicato anche in lingua) e conosce l'Inglese l'Esperanto (di cui ha pubblicato due libri). Ama dipingere su tela, con tecnica mista, personaggi e soggetti di ambito letterario (alcuni dei lavori hanno accompagnato il titolo di copertina o la presentazione dei libri). Dopo avere esordito con la raccolta di racconti E nessuno risponde è risultato finalista di poesia al Premio De Libero per tre edizioni consecutive (per la xxxvii rassegna poetica ha presentato Pericle sul Parnaso). Apprezzato per i romanzi L'Acchiappanuvole e Il discepolo di Hegel, ha all'attivo diverse pubblicazioni e scrive saggi di Narratologia per LibriCK la rivista degli scrittori. The 2002 Nobel Prize to Imre Kertész is a symptom: Hungary is now weltliterarisch. The historical process - which has seen Hungarian writers working since the 1970s to gain ontological autonomy for their field, to write in a language that is not mendacious, to go beyond the 'modern' of real socialism to a 'postmodern' in which reality is not "described", but "employed", and to anthropic ends - is at a standstill, it is greeted abroad as a common heritage. According to Ungheria 1945-2002. La dimensione letteraria - which concludes a prolonged period of analytical work (see Scrivere postmoderno in Ungheria, 1995, and Scrittori ungheresi allo specchio, 2003) - the Hungarian contribution to the contemporary era lies in its sense for this anthropic function of literature (even though the context now seems to want to thwart this effort).

La cultura ungherese può vantare una ricca letteratura medievale e umanistica in lingua latina e, dal Duecento in poi, anche la sua letteratura in volgare divenne una presenza crescente nella cultura letteraria, per diventare nel Cinquecento una vera e propria letteratura nazionale, nell’ambito della quale gli autori più importanti, come i poeti Bálint Balassi, Miklós Zrínyi, István Gyöngyösi, e come i prosatori Péter Bornemisza, Gáspár Heltai, Péter Pázmány o Ferenc Faludi, scrissero i loro capolavori in lingua ungherese. Le loro opere, con qualche rara eccezione, non erano tradotte in lingue straniere e quindi erano conosciute soltanto in Ungheria. Di conseguenza anche in Italia il pubblico e gli studiosi, non conoscendo la lingua ungherese, potevano leggere soltanto le opere latine dei nostri umanisti (da Janus Pannonius a Johannes Sambucus), mentre la letteratura in lingua ungherese esiste in traduzione italiana (e naturalmente in tedesco, in inglese e in francese) soltanto a partire dal Romanticismo. Per colmare questa lacuna e al fine di agevolare lo studio della letteratura ungherese in Italia, si propone questa antologia bilingue della prosa antica ungherese che è stata redatta presso la Cattedra di Lingua e Letteratura Ungherese dell’Università di Roma, La Sapienza con le traduzioni di Marta Dal Zuffo a cura del Prof. Péter Sárközy. Il volume comprende una selezione di opere dei più importanti prosatori ungheresi dei primi sette secoli, dal Discorso funebre del 1200 fino ai narratori del Romanticismo ungherese. Uno degli intenti dei curatori del volume è il desiderio di stimolare i nuovi, giovani traduttori a cimentarsi con opere ancora inedite in italiano e, anche, a riprendere in mano la produzione dei grandi romanzieri dell’Ottocento che fanno parte del comune tesoro della letteratura mondiale, ma le cui traduzioni in italiano risalgono oramai a cento anni fa, e una loro nuova traduzione moderna potrebbe costituire fonte di grande piacere, tanto per i loro futuri traduttori quanto per i loro lettori italiani.
