In the face of increasing complexity, uncertainty and difficulty in the design and implementation of reforms, companies, organizations and institutions must strive to capitalize on the prevailing disarray by acting wisely in overcoming it. Strategic engineering is part of an integrative, tool-based approach, inspired by the life sciences and creative recursion. This book is structured into three parts, which correspond to the three main phases of the strategic engineering approach: observe and discern; judge and arbitrate; act and intervene. Strategic Engineering has wide appeal, relevant to senior leaders, decisionmakers, managers and practitioners within businesses, government and local authorities. It is also intended for those who wish to develop their capability in anticipatory or transformative management within economic, sociopolitical and strategic contexts.

The book is based on an international research project that analyzed sixty LEPs, among them the Boston Harbor cleanup; the first phase of subway construction in Ankara, Turkey; a hydro dam on the Caroni River in Venezuela; and the construction of offshore oil platforms west of Flor, Norway. As the number, complexity, and scope of large engineering projects (LEPs) increase worldwide, the huge stakes may endanger the survival of corporations and threaten the stability of countries that approach these projects unprepared. According to the authors, the "front-end" engineering of institutional arrangements and strategic systems is a far greater determinant of an LEP's success than are the more tangible aspects of project engineering and management. The authors use the research results to develop an experience-based theoretical framework that will allow managers to understand and respond to the complexity and uncertainty inherent in all LEPs. In addition to managers and scholars of large-scale projects, the book will be of interest to those studying the relationship between institutions and strategy, risk management, and corporate governance in general. In the past decades asset intensive companies have witnessed a number of regulatory changes and especially industry is facing ever increasing competitiveness. To overcome these challenges different asset management methods have been developed aimed to improve the asset life cycle. Especially the design phase and operation and maintenance phase have seen a rise in tools and methods. Smarter design can lead to improved operation. Likewise, improved operation and maintenance leads to lower replacement costs and may provide the basis for better design. This book brings together and coherently presents the current state of the art in asset management research and practice in Europe from a life cycle perspective. Each chapter focuses on specific parts of this life cycle and explains how the methods and techniques described are connected and how they improve the asset life cycle, thus treating this important subject from a unique perspective.

Strategic Management Of Global Manufacturing Networks written by Thomas Friedli and has been published by Springer this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2014-07-08 with Business & Economics categories.

The preceding process of globalization and the continuously rising competitive pressure on manufacturing companies in more developed economies unveiled the limits of classical site-focused optimization approaches. The focus of network optimization shifts ever more towards an integrative view of manufacturing networks, striving for a harmonization of the strategy-, configuration- and coordination levels. This book presents such an integrative approach to the strategic management of manufacturing networks. Besides strategic network requirements, this book discusses the derivation of an optimal global footprint and the optimization of network coordination activities. Special attention is paid to the site roles concept, especially to the concept of 'lead factory'. A large number of up-to-date cases from the producing industry enrich the book and provide the reader with vivid examples for the application of the presented concepts. Hence, this book is a must-read for both practitioners and academic researchers.

Oak Island Pit written by Benjamin Ramirez and has been published by Publifye AS this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2025-03-04 with History categories.

Oak Island Pit explores the enduring mystery of Oak Island, focusing on the sophisticated 18th-century engineering behind the infamous Money Pit and its intricate flood tunnels. Rather than solely focusing on the treasure hunt narrative, the book delves into the architectural design and historical context of the site, combining archaeological findings, historical records, and engineering analyses. The construction of the Money Pit involved impressive civil engineering for its time; some experts believe the flood tunnels were designed to protect something of great value, while others suggest a different purpose altogether. The book uniquely dissects the physical evidence, such as wood samples and structural components, to analyze the site's original intent. It argues that understanding the engineering principles employed is key to unraveling the mystery. The historical context explores potential motivations for such an elaborate system, considering the geopolitical landscape of the 1700s, including piracy and naval warfare. The book progresses logically, starting with an introduction to the Oak Island mystery and subsequent excavation attempts. It then analyzes archaeological findings and delves into the engineering aspects of the flood system, using detailed diagrams and comparative analyses. Finally, it integrates historical records and maps to contextualize the findings, offering a data-driven approach to this Canadian mystery that moves beyond speculative theories.
