The papers in this volume study the relationship between language use and the concept of the “tourist gaze” through a range of communicative practices from different cultures and languages. From a pragmatic perspective, the authors investigate how language constantly adapts to contextual constraints which affect tourism discourse as a strategic meaning-making process that turns insignificant places into desirable tourist destinations. The case studies draw on both, in situ interactions with visitors, such as guided tours and counter information, old and new mediatized genres, i.e. guide books, travelogues, print advertising as well as TV-commercials, service web-sites and apps. Despite the diversity of data, one of the common findings in the volume is that staging the sensory ‘lived’ tourist experience is the lynchpin of all communicative practices. Hence, the use of tourism language reveals itself as the mirror of how ‘people on the move’ continuously enact as ‘tourists’ and ‘places’ are constructed as must-see ‘sights’.

The rapidly changing context of the modern tourism and hospitality industry, responding to the needs of increasingly demanding consumers, coupled with the fragmenting nature of the marketing and media environment has led to an increased emphasis on communications strategies. How can marketing communication strategies meet the changing and challenging demands of modern consumers, and maintain a company’s competitive edge? Marketing Communications in Tourism and Hospitality: concepts, strategies and cases discusses this vital discipline specifically for the tourism and hospitality industry. Using contemporary case studies such as South African Tourism, Travelocity and Virgin Trains, it explains and critiques the practice and theory in relation to this industry. Combining a critical theoretical overview with a practical guide to techniques and skills, it illustrates the role that communications play in the delivery and representation of hospitality and tourism services, whilst developing practical skills needed to understand, interpret and implement communications strategies within a management context. This systematic and cohesive text is essential reading for hospitality management students, and an invaluable resource for marketing practitioners in this growing area.

This new volume illustrates how one of the most rapidly evolving industries in the world—travel and tourism—has transcended its immediate economic concerns and has become a major signifier for cultural patterns and cross-cultural communications. It discusses how the function of language has become the subject of scrutiny in the context of intellectual deliberation vis-à-vis travel and tourism. Drawing on discourse analytics and ethnographic approaches, this volume brings together perspectives from the lived experiences of residents, hosts, and ethnographers to explore the extent to which linguistic and cultural differences are identified, constructed, negotiated, and maintained in tourism encounters.

When overseas travel agency owners and directors, predominantly fromMiddle Eastern countries visitedmy Istanbul office and sawmy “Travel Management” book published in 2018 in Turkish, insisted that I publish the same book in English. These comments made me excited and encouraged to publish the book in English with some revisions and additions. Travel and tourism industry is one of the world’s largest industries and a dynamic engine of economic development of the countries. It is a great source of income and employment for countries that receive more international tourists. For this reason, the countries have increased their investment in the travel and tourism industry, Tour operators and travel agencies have the major role for the development of tourism. Their business has vastly changed in the past 20 years. They have to continuously adapt and redefine their roles to the changing environment and technology. As a result of this change, different approaches in management, operation and marketing strategies in the travel industry have emerged. From tourism products and services to operation and destination management, from management functions to the distribution channels, from reservation systems to marketing functions, almost all travel concepts have changed shape. In travel agency business besides the traditional (classical) system used for many years, neoclassical systemandmodern (contemporary) systems such as online travel agencies (OTA’s) and destination management companies (DMC’s) have emerged, intermediaries diversified and increased. Pursuant to these developments travel operators who can keep up with these changes have created a wide academic and practical concept, theoretical discussions and most importantly different industrial structures. This book provides a wide perspective with modern concepts to the operation management and marketing strategies in travel industry and it is divided into 12 chapters. Each chapter starts with learning outcomes. Basic principles and concepts of subjects are mentioned both theoretically and practically supported by tables, graphs and figures for a better understanding of specific chapters.

This book works to fill a serious gap in tourism and hospitality research – children as future consumers. For decades, researchers and industry practitioners alike have overlooked and undervalued the significance of children’s perspectives and their influence as decision-makers. However, the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (1989) emphasizes that children have the right to participate in matters that affect them. With this in mind, the contributors to this edited collection draw attention to children as thinkers, actors and transformers of the future of the tourism and hospitality industry. Through a mix of conceptual and empirical chapters, the book collectively supports an overarching theme: the empowerment of children as present and future consumers should be a core component of any sustainable tourism initiative. Towards this goal, the chapters herein represent internationally diverse perspectives and offer a number of innovative recommendations to the industry’s practitioners.
