The rise of the knowledge economy has far-reaching implications for the nature of economic organization as well as firm strategy. Not surprisingly, thinking in management studies as well as in economics has been profoundly affected by these changes. Thus, management thinking in particular has been increasingly characterized by a schism between those who advocate 'knowledge' or 'capabilities-based' approaches in the strategy and organization fields and those who adopt more economics-influenced approaches, notably the economics of organization. This book is a sustained attempt to overcome this schism. Its basic argument is that knowledge-based and organizational economics approaches are not substitutes but complements. In particular, organizational economics has much to contribute with respect to furthering the understanding of efficient organization and strategy in the emerging knowledge economy. This theme is taken through several theoretical as well as empirical variations. Themes such as the incentive liabilities of flat, 'knowledge-based' organizations and the role of complementary HRM practices for fostering knowledge sharing and creation are extensively treated. The book thus contains important implications for knowledge management, organizational design, and firm strategy." The book encompasses nine chapters which critically examine current thinking on strategy, and organization. The reasoning is non-technical. While primarily aimed at a management studies audience, economists and other social scientists will also benefit from it, including Advanced Students, Academics, and Researchers.

Few concepts in business today are as widely discussed as business models. Research shows that business models are a better predictor of financial performance than traditional industry classifications. The unprecedented potential of the internet (interactivity, connectivity and speed of communication) along with the new generation of IT applications for enabling co-operative working and communication gives rise to new business models for organization creation and development. It is becoming clear that organizations that manage to incorporate values such as sense of community, knowledge sharing and enlightened self-interest into their business model, will perform better in the network economy than organizations whose business models are based solely on economic rationalism. This book features a business model that presents three new types of business model, in which 'customization', 'innovation', and 'authenticity' play an important role as solutions to the new requirements of business. The authors provide an explanation of their new models and explain how they can be used by both profit and not-for-profit organizations to design an integrated strategy for organizational development, governance, IT and business processes. The result is a rigorous but very accessible guide for anyone interested in organizational development and new business strategy.

Innovation Strategy for the Knowledge Economy is intended for managers who have practiced the best of quality and re-engineering management techniques and are ready to transform their organizations with the systematic notions of knowledge creation and application. It is for organization leaders who prefer to be inspired with innovation strategy than hit over the head with change management techniques. It does not deal with barriers, hurdles, or conflicts to be resolved; rather, it paints a possible vision of how we can take advantage of our collective learning to move an enterprise forward. At the core is an understanding of the dual value of knowledge (content) and innovation (process) using 'real-time' learning as the methodology. This text contains a range of case studies from the United Kingdom, Ireland, Canada, the USA and Australia. Contributions focus both on those factors critical to success and on reasons for failure, but a common theme to emerge across all contributions is the requirement for a clear political vision, commitment and leadership if the shift from traditional forms of social and economic organization to high-value, knowledge-intensive economies is to be safely negotiated. At the same time, individual case studies provide valuable blueprints for successful implementation of an ambitious public service change agenda.

This book is intended to spark a discourse on, and contribute to finding a clear consensus in, the debate between conceptualizing a knowledge strategy and planning a knowledge strategy. It explores the complex relationship between the notions of knowledge and strategy in the business context, one that is of practical importance to companies. After reviewing the extant literature, the book shows how the concept of knowledge strategies can be seen as a new perspective for exploring business strategies. It proposes a new approach that clarifies how planned and emergent knowledge strategies allow companies to make projections into the uncertain and unpredictable future that dominates today’s economy.
