Structural and Resonance Techniques in Biological Research discusses the fundamentals and applications of nuclear magnetic resonance, electron spin resonance, Mössbauer spectroscopy, x-ray absorption spectroscopy, macromolecular crystallography, and small-angle x-ray scattering and diffraction. The chapters are aimed at a level such that only a general understanding of chemistry and biology is required. The objective is to present material in a way that allows the research worker to assess quickly the applicability, utility, and significance of the specific technique to his or her problem or field of interest. Together with Optical Techniques in Biological Research, this book marks the introduction of a new series of volumes, Physical Techniques in Biology and Medicine, which is intended to replace a previous treatise, Physical Techniques in Biological Research.

Chemistry and Biochemistry of Flavoenzymes summarizes the present knowledge of the chemical and physical properties of free flavin, modified flavins occurring in nature, and deazaflavin. This information forms the fundamental basis for understanding the catalytic properties of flavoenzymes. Flavoproteins involved in transport, electron transfer, oxidation, dehydrogenation and hydroxylation reactions are discussed with respect to their biochemical and biophysical properties. The book presents the catalytic mechanisms of the flavoproteins in detail and, where available, three-dimensional structures and molecular biology data are included. The medical aspects of free and protein-bound flavin are also briefly discussed. Chemistry and Biochemistry of Flavoenzymes is an essential reference source for chemists, biochemists, toxicologists, biologists, pharmacologists, and researchers in the pharmaceutical industry.

Physical Methods In Bioinorganic Chemistry written by Lawrence Que and has been published by MIT Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2010-05-10 with Science categories.
This text provides detailed coverage of physical methods used in bioinorganic chemistry. This text provides detailed coverage of physical methods used in bioinorganic chemistry. Individual chapters are devoted to electronic absorption spectroscopy, resonance Raman spectroscopy, electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy, ENDOR and ESEEM, magnetic circular dichroism, Mössbauer spectroscopy, magnetism, NMR spectroscopy as applied to paramagnetic systems, and x-ray absorption spectroscopy. The book aims to provide a fundamental understanding of each method and demonstrate how data obtained from a system of bioinorganic interest can be interpreted. Case studies are presented in the last chapter in which more than one technique has been applied to gain insight into each given bioinorganic problem. By integrating theory with experimentation and providing an orientation that is more biological than that presented in previously published books, Physical Methods in Bioinorganic Chemistry: Spectroscopy and Magnetism will serve as an important new text for students of bioinorganic chemistry, biochemistry, molecular biology, and their professors.

Biological Research On Addiction written by and has been published by Academic Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2013-05-17 with Psychology categories.
Biological Research on Addiction examines the neurobiological mechanisms of drug use and drug addiction, describing how the brain responds to addictive substances as well as how it is affected by drugs of abuse. The book's four main sections examine behavioral and molecular biology; neuroscience; genetics; and neuroimaging and neuropharmacology as they relate to the addictive process. This volume is especially effective in presenting current knowledge on the key neurobiological and genetic elements in an individual's susceptibility to drug dependence, as well as the processes by which some individuals proceed from casual drug use to drug dependence. Biological Research on Addiction is one of three volumes comprising the 2,500-page series, Comprehensive Addictive Behaviors and Disorders. This series provides the most complete collection of current knowledge on addictive behaviors and disorders to date. In short, it is the definitive reference work on addictions. - Each article provides glossary, full references, suggested readings, and a list of web resources - Edited and authored by the leaders in the field around the globe – the broadest, most expert coverage available - Discusses the genetic basis of addiction - Covers basic science research from a variety of animal studies

Advanced Methods In Structural Biology written by Toshiya Senda and has been published by Springer this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2016-08-03 with Science categories.
This book provides practical information on a whole set of protein experiments for advanced structural biology, such as X-ray crystallography, NMR, electron microscopy, advanced mass spectroscopy, and surface plasmon resonance, as well as a wide variety of expression systems including eukaryotic and in vitro expression. In the past decade, structural genomics studies have pushed forward the development of automated methods in the field of structural biology, however there is an increasing need for the structural analysis of difficult targets, such as large protein complexes and membrane proteins, which are hard to achieve using conventional automated methods, and require knowledge that goes beyond standard protein chemistry protocols. To address these problems and to help researchers develop novel methods, this volume provides examples of the development of new protein investigation methods and their theoretical background. This book particularly appeals to graduate students, postdoctoral researchers, young investigators wishing to gain a better understanding of the theory behind experiments, and those seeking further advanced, practical structural biology methods.

The volume presents a survey of the research by Kurt Wüthrich and his associates during the period 1965 to 1994. A selection of reprints of original papers on the use of NMR spectroscopy in structural biology is supplemented with an introduction, which outlines the foundations and the historical development of the use of NMR spectroscopy for the determination of three-dimensional structures of biological macromolecules in solution. The original papers are presented in groups highlighting protein structure determination by NMR, studies of dynamic properties and hydration of biological macromolecules, and practical applications of the NMR methodology in fields such as enzymology, transcriptional regulation, immunosuppression and protein folding.

Protein Structural Biology In Biomedical Research Part A written by C. Woodward and has been published by Elsevier this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1998-01-16 with Science categories.
Recent advances in protein structural biology, coupled with new developments in human genetics, have opened the door to understanding the molecular basis of many metabolic, physiological, and developmental processes in human biology. Medical pathologies, and their chemical therapies, are increasingly being described at the molecular level. For single-gene diseases, and some multi-gene conditions, identification of highly correlated genes immediately leads to identification of covalent structures of the actual chemical agents of the disease, namely the protein gene products. Once the primary sequence of a protein is ascertained, structural biologists work to determine its three-dimensional, biologically active structure, or to predict its probable fold and/or function by comparison to the data base of known protein structures. Similarly, three-dimensional structures of proteins produced by microbiological pathogens are the subject of intense study, for example, the proteins necessary for maturation of the human HIV virus. Once the three-dimensional structure of a protein is known or predicted, its function, as well as potential binding sites for drugs that inhibit its function, become tractable questions. The medical ramifications of the burgeoning results of protein structural biology, from gene replacement therapy to "rational" drug design, are well recognized by researchers in biomedical areas, and by a significant proportion of the general population. The purpose of this book is to introduce biomedical scientists to important areas of protein structural biology, and to provide an insightful orientation to the primary literature that shapes the field in each subject. The chapters in this volume cover aspects of protein structural biology which have led to the recognition of fundamental relationships between protein structure and function.
