Understanding how gravity loads and wind and earthquake loads flow through a building is of utmost importance to all structural engineers and architects. Paradoxically, this critical idea is practically not addressed in any textbook on the market. Meant as a companion to the author’s Structures: A Geometric Approach, this textbook fills that need with qualitative techniques as well as quantitative tools that use state of the art visual representation of forces and deformations in structures. Structures: A Studio Approach reaches out to both structural engineers and designers by presenting structural engineering topics in an interdisciplinary studio environment. Using many graphical techniques, it offers a very rigorous approach, but also enables creativity. Cutting edge finite element as well as parametric modeling tools are used, and state of the art visual representations of force flow help both groups of students realize that understanding three dimensional load flow in a building is a requirement for channeling that flow in a structurally efficient and visually expressive manner. Ultimately, the reader is able to develop a unique structural sensibility; an ethos that places structural design on an equal footing with the design of program, skin, massing and site.

*Winner of the 2021 TAA Textbook Excellence Award* Honorable Mention of the 2021 BTES Book Award Structures by Design: Thinking, Making, Breaking is a new type of structures textbook for architects who prefer to learn using the hands-on, creative problem-solving techniques typically found in a design studio. Instead of presenting structures as abstract concepts defined by formulas and diagrams, this book uses a project-based approach to demonstrate how a range of efficient, effective, and expressive architectural solutions can be generated, tested, and revised. Each section of the book is focused on a particular manner by which structural resistance is provided: Form (Arches and Cables), Sections (Beams, Slabs, and Columns), Vectors (Trusses and Space Frames), Surfaces (Shells and Plates), and Frames (Connections and High-Rises). The design exercises featured in each chapter use the Think, Make, Break method of reiterative design to develop and evaluate different structural options. A variety of structural design tools will be used, including the human body, physical models, historical precedents, static diagrams, traditional formulae, and advanced digital analysis. The book can be incorporated into various course curricula and studio exercises because of the flexibility of the format and range of expertise required for these explorations. More than 500 original illustrations and photos provide example solutions and inspiration for further design exploration.

Architectural Structures written by Edmond Saliklis and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2022-05-20 with Architecture categories.

Architectural Structures presents an alternative approach to understanding structural engineering load flow using a visually engaging and three-dimensional format. This book presents a ground-breaking new way of establishing equilibrium in architectural structures using the Modern Müller-Breslau method. While firmly grounded in principles of mechanics, this method does not use traditional algebraic statics, nor does it use classical graphic statics. Rather, it solely uses new geometric tools. Both statically determinate and statically indeterminate structures are analyzed using this graphic method to provide a geometric understanding of how load flows through architectural structures. This book includes approachable coverage of parametric modeling of two-dimensional and three-dimensional structures, as well as more advanced topics such as indeterminate structural analysis and plastic analysis. Hundreds of detailed drawings created by the author are included throughout to aid understanding. Architecture and structural engineering students can employ this novel method by hand sketching, or by programming in parametric design software. A detailed yet approachable guide, Architectural Structures is ideal for students of architecture, construction management, and structural engineering, at all levels. Practitioners will find the method extremely useful for quickly solving load tracing problems in three-dimensional grids.

A significant challenge has arisen as the way people interact with their environments undergoes significant changes, requiring crucial adjustments to existing environments, design methods, and educational systems. The relationship between these elements forms the backdrop for a complex challenge faced by academic scholars and design professionals alike. As the backbone of design education, design studios operate as microcosms, each with their unique interpretation of ongoing changes and distinctive approaches to solving real-world problems. This evolving landscape prompts a pivotal question: How can the varied pedagogies within design education be curated and explored to foster a more comprehensive understanding of their impact on our physical environment? Novel Approaches to Urban Design and Architecture Education, is a book that dives deep into the heart of this issue, examining the intricacies of design studio practices and their role in shaping the urban and architectural landscape. This compilation of original case studies and research is an indispensable resource, addressing the critical need for an exploration of the varied pedagogical approaches employed across different levels of design education.

Although the disciplines of architecture and structural engineering have both experienced their own historical development, their interaction has resulted in many fascinating and delightful structures. To take this interaction to a higher level, there is a need to stimulate the inventive and creative design of architectural structures and to persuade architects and structural engineers to further collaborate in this process, exploiting together new concepts, applications and challenges. This set of book of abstracts and full paper searchable CD-ROM presents selected papers presented at the 3rd International Conference on Structures and Architecture Conference (ICSA2016), organized by the School of Architecture of the University of Minho, Guimarães, Portugal (July 2016), to promote the synergy in the collaboration between the disciplines of architecture and structural engineering.

There has been a historical discord over curriculum and teaching practices for structures courses in architectural education, as students are disinterested and not able to integrate learnings from such courses into their design solutions. The research in the book "Structures in Architecture Education: Teaching and Integrating in Design" involves the development of an assessment tool by a comparative analysis of past frameworks to understand integration that assesses three dimensions of integration of structures (performance, physical and visual) against three building systems (exterior, interior and services). Around 27–30 samples are selected for each year from first to fourth from three institutions. Data for pedagogy and curriculum are also collected that is used to analyse the results from assessment of samples. In the second part of this book, structural equation modelling is used to analyse if the studio is the preferred mode of learning structures.

The Design Build Studio written by Tolya Stonorov and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2017-09-20 with Architecture categories.

The Design-Build Studio examines sixteen international community driven design-build case studies through process and product, with preceding chapters on community involvement, digital and handcraft methodologies and a graphic Time Map. Together these projects serve as a field guide to the current trends in academic design-build studios, a window into the different processes and methodologies being taught and realized today. Design-build supports the idea that building, making and designing are intrinsic to each other: knowledge of one strengthens and informs the expression of the other. Hands-on learning through the act of building what you design translates theories and ideas into real world experience. The work chronicled in this book reveals how this type of applied knowledge grounds us in the physicality of the world in which we live.
