Consulente del Ministero per i Beni Culturali, dal 1980 ha promosso e/o presieduto vari Comitati Nazionali sul Rinascimento, sul Barocco, sulla storia di Roma e sulla cultura "antiquaria". Dal 1983 è stato prima Vicepresidente e poi Presidente del Comitato Nazionale per i giardini storici. Autore di oltre 250 pubblicazioni. GIUSEPPE BONACCORSO, Ricercatore e docente universitario di Storia dell'architettura presso la Facoltà d'Ingegneria dell'Università di Roma "Tor Vergata". Ha svolto attività di ricerca presso l'Università IUAV di Venezia, l'Österreichische Akademie der Wissenschaften e la Bibliotheca Hertziana, Max-Planck-Institut für Kunstgeschichte. Between the catastrophic flood of the Tiber River in 1557 and the death of the “engineering pope” Sixtus V in 1590, the city of Rome was transformed by intense activity involving building construction and engineering projects of all kinds. Using hundreds of archival documents and primary sources, Engineering the Eternal City explores the processes and people involved in these infrastructure projects—sewers, bridge repair, flood prevention, aqueduct construction, the building of new, straight streets, and even the relocation of immensely heavy ancient Egyptian obelisks that Roman emperors had carried to the city centuries before. This portrait of an early modern Rome examines the many conflicts, failures, and successes that shaped the city, as decision-makers tried to control not only Rome’s structures and infrastructures but also the people who lived there. Taking up visual images of the city created during the same period—most importantly in maps and urban representations, this book shows how in a time before the development of modern professionalism and modern bureaucracies, there was far more wide-ranging conversation among people of various backgrounds on issues of engineering and infrastructure than there is in our own times. Physicians, civic leaders, jurists, cardinals, popes, and clerics engaged with painters, sculptors, architects, printers, and other practitioners as they discussed, argued, and completed the projects that remade Rome.

This book contains proceedings of the international conference Santini and Italy, held in Rome in June 2023. In his contribution, Augusto Roca de Amicis describes the nature of the structural relations of Santini's work to Italian architecture. Pavel Kalina discusses the development of Santini scholarship in the art historical literature of the 20th and early 21st centuries. Richard Biegel shows in his contribution that the sources of Santini's work can be found not only in Italian but also in French architecture. Michael Young's text points to the connection between Santini's architecture and contemporary literary theory and practice, which blended different languages and styles. In his article, Ulrich Fürst stresses the importance of a sense of originality for the design of the Benedictine monastery church at Rajhrad, whose construction demonstrated its independence from the monastery of Břevnov, for which the Dientzenhofers worked. Johana Bronková explores the relationship between Santini's architecture and the work of the great Italian architect Francesco Borromini. Marisa Tabarrini presents a completely new discovery - the unknown plans of Santini's church of St. Peter and Paul in Prague's Zderaz. Important for understanding the functioning of Baroque buildings is the article by Jakub Řehak, who analyses the water and ventilation system of the monastery in Plasy. On the other hand, Madleine Riedenklau's text is devoted to the literature on the monastery and church in Sedlec. Irena Bukačová introduces the reader to the past and present of the pilgrimage site in Mariánská Týnice.

Knowledge and the Early Modern City uses case studies from the sixteenth to the eighteenth centuries to examine the relationships between knowledge and the city and how these changed in a period when the nature and conception of both was drastically transformed. Both knowledge formation and the European city were increasingly caught up in broader institutional structures and regional and global networks of trade and exchange during the early modern period. Moreover, new ideas about the relationship between nature and the transcendent, as well as technological transformations, impacted upon both considerably. The union of the two royal houses - the Habsburgs and the Bourbons - in the early seventeenth century illustrates the extent to which marriage was a tool of government in Renaissance Europe, and festivals a manifestation of power and cultural superiority. With contributions from scholars representing a range of disciplines, this volume provides an all-round view of the sequence of festivals and events surrounding the dynastic marriages which were agreed upon in 1612 but not celebrated until 1615 owing to the constant interruption of festivities by protestant uprisings. The occasion inspired an extraordinary range of records from exchanges of political pamphlets, descriptions of festivities, visual materials, the music of songs and ballets, and the impressions of witnesses and participants. The study of these remarkable sources shows how a team of scholars from diverse disciplines can bring into focus again the creative genius of artists: painters, architects and costume designers, musicians and poets, experts in equestrianism, in pyrotechnics, and in the use of symbolic languages. Their artistic efforts were staged against a background of intense political diplomacy and continuing civil strife; and yet, the determination of Marie de Médicis and her advisers and of the Duke of Lerma brought to a triumphant conclusion negotiations and spectacular commemorations whose legacy was to inform festival art throughout European courts for decades. In addition to printed and manuscript sources, the volume identifies ways of giving future researchers access to festival texts and studies through digitization, making the book both an in-depth analysis of a particular occasion and a blueprint for future engagement with digital festival resources.
