"The aim of the book is to reflect linguistic research at a university department of English. It is restricted to lexicology, grammar and language contact. The importance of corpus-based studies in anglistics is evident in all sections, but particularly so in the lexicology section, which contains articles on corpus and discourse typology. Apart from these, the articles in this section range from studies of Old English words to teenagers' swearwords in present-day London. Although a majority of the articles deal with pragmatic aspects of words, there are also more traditional studies of word-formation and figures of speech. The grammar section deals with some grammatical problems of past and present English, eg third person plural personal pronouns in Old English, zero relatives and nuclear and peripheral clauses in modern English. It also contains an article on the development of English grammar examples and one on the part of a model in foreign language learning. The section devoted to language contact contains an article concerned with the influence of one English variety on another and three concerned with English influence on Norwegian and Swedish."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. The contributions in this volume are a reflection of the entire range of Interpreting Studies, from explorations of research methodology and interpreting quality research to public service interpreting today and in the past, risk management strategies in court interpreting, and the interdependencies of interpreters in project networks. They address questions such as who can be called an interpreter, present new approaches to interpreter education, and discuss advances in technology, both in terms of speech-to-text interpreting and the changes that the Covid-19 pandemic has brought to the lives of interpreters. The breadth of this volume’s topics reflects the oeuvre of Franz Pöchhacker, who has left his mark on Interpreting Studies over more than three decades. This tribute not only reflects the many strands of his work, but also offers new research and insights by established scholars and young researchers in the ever growing field of Interpreting Studies.

Schools In Transition written by Pauli Siljander and has been published by Springer this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2016-12-27 with Education categories.

School is one of the most focal institutions in modern society. It is largely through the institutionalized forms of education that modern society attempts to secure and maintain its social and economic well-being and its valuable cultural life forms. In addition to this, school is the essential institution through which the future of a society is defined. Thus, at least when understood traditionally as a pedagogical institution, the school stands at the center of historically and socially constructed cultural life forms and at the brink of an unknown future: the determination of that future characterizes the pedagogical task of the school. It naturally ensues then, that modern discourses of the school have always been intertwined with the critical question of how past, present and future can be linked in educational practices so that schools can foster (in ever better ways) the well-being of individuals, societies and humanity. The chapters in this volume, despite the variety of viewpoints, share this critical view. The purpose of the volume is not to offer definite answers; rather it is to stress that to understand the role and functions of school in contemporary society and to orientate its transition, a well-founded critical evaluation of prevailing pedagogical practices and policy trends is required. This evaluation is vital for the future of school and society.
