Although semiotics has, in one guise or another, ftourished uninterruptedly since pre Socratic times in the West, and important semiotic themes have emerged and devel oped independently in both the Brahmanie and Buddhistic traditions, semiotics as an organized undertaking began to 100m only in the 1960s. Workshops materialized, with a perhaps surprising spontaneity, over much ofEurope-Eastern and Western and in North America. Thereafter, others quickly surfaced almost everywhere over the litera te globe. Different places strategically allied themselves with different lega eies, but all had a common thrust: to aim at a general theory of signs, by way of a description of different sign systems, their comparative analysis, and their classifi cation. More or less permanent confederations were forged with the most diverse academic disciplines, and amazingly varied frameworks were devised-suited to the needs of the times and the sites-to carry the work of consolidation forward. Bit by bit, mutually supportive international networks were put together. Today, it can truly be asserted that semiotics has become a global enterprise. This, of course, is far from saying that the map is uniform or even that world-wide homogeneity is in the least desirable. While our conjoint ultimate goal remains steadily in focus, the multiplicity of avenues available for its realization is inherent in the advent ure of the search itself.

Volumul de faţă restituie prima carte a Ioanei Em. Petrescu, publicată în 1974 la Editura Dacia din Cluj, sub titlul Ion Budai‑Deleanu şi eposul comic (la origini, o teză de doctorat), dimpreună cu un grupaj de studii şi schiţe (majoritatea, inedite) consacrate aceluiaşi scriitor şi operei sale. Este pentru întâia oară că studiul de debut al autoarei cunoaşte o reeditare: el a devenit, în 36 de ani, atât un titlu de referinţă în bibliografia istoriei literare româneşti, cât şi o carte greu de găsit în bibliotecile de specialitate. Încă de la apariţie, caracterul său atipic s‑a vădit printr‑o receptare critică adesea ezitantă în a „numi” noutatea metodologică şi a înţelege îndrăzneala perspectivei; lucrurile nu par să se fi echilibrat între timp, în sensul că referinţa la Ion Budai‑Deleanu şi eposul comic rămâne, mai ales pentru criticii perioadei actuale, marcată de prejudecăţile predecesorilor acestora. Am considerat, de aceea, că un Dosar al receptării critice este mai mult decât necesar: cititorul avizat va identifica liniile de forţă – şi liniile de fugă – ale unui fenomen extrem de interesant pentru peisajul ideilor noastre literare. Acesta din urmă are în vedere receptivitatea la nou, reacţia oarecum „paradigmatică” faţă de erudiţie, respectiv paşii discreţi ai unei consacrări care frizează, astăzi, o adevărată „folclorizare” a exegezei inovatoare a Ioanei Em. Petrescu. Aşa se face că numeroase studii consacrate operei lui Budai‑Deleanu, care au urmat volumului ei din 1974, îl citează pe acesta abundent (dar fără a exprima o judecată de valoare asupra comentariului critic propriu‑zis), când este vorba să ofere o contextualizare de poetică istorică şi comparată a poemului eroicomic în discuţie. De asemenea, există şi studii care preiau tacit ideile Ioanei Em. Petrescu, în excursurile consacrate filoanelor literare în descendenţa cărora se construieşte Ţiganiada, respectiv raporturilor dintre eroic şi comic în poetica operei.
