This book presents a comprehensive study on microextrusion-based 3D bioprinting technologies for bioinks with various crosslinking mechanisms, chiefly focusing on the bioprinting process and bioink properties to provide readers with a better understanding of this state-of-the-art technology. Further, it summarizes a number of general criteria and research routes for microextrusion-based 3D bioprinting using three experimental studies based on shear-thinning, thermo-sensitive and non-viscous hydrogel bioinks. The book also presents sample applications in the areas of stem cells and cell matrix interaction. The book highlights pioneering results in the development of bioprinting technologies and bioinks, which were published in high-quality journals such as Advanced Materials, Biofabrication and ACS Biomaterials Science & Engineering. These include an in-situ crosslinking strategy that overcomes the viscosity limits for bioinks, which is virtually impossible using conventional strategies, and can be generalized for other bioink formulations.

3D bioprinting is an emerging innovative technology that involves the fabrication of essential 3D functional biomedical constructs by combining cells and biomaterials with vital growth and differentiation factors. It aims to replicate the natural tissue milieu and holds great promise in fields like tissue engineering, regenerative medicine, drug development and testing, precision medicine, etc. 3D bioprinted disease-specific models help to study, screen the treatment methods and understand the mechanism of action. In personalized medicine, patient-specific tissue and organ constructs can be developed for specific surgeries and treatments tailored to a patient’s unique anatomy and genetics. 3D functional tissue construct addresses the problem of organ shortage as it lowers the risk of rejection of tissues and organs. The technique also replaces the need to experiment on animals and improves the accuracy of pre-clinical studies to test the safety and efficacy of new drugs in bioprinted tissues. This book provides comprehensive coverage of the application of 3D bioprinting technology. It is a collection of contributions by experts with cutting-edge know-how. The book is meant for medical practitioners, pharma companies, CROs, product developers, students, researchers, academicians, policymakers and practitioners.

Burgess and has been published by Frontiers Media SA this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2024-02-05 with Science categories.
The mechanisms underlying acute and chronic lung diseases are complex, reflecting the interplay between multiple cell types, their microenvironment and exogenous challenges. While traditional in vitro cell culture approaches have been instrumental in advancing our knowledge of cellular signalling and function, they typically lack the cell-cell and cell-matrix interactions that define the niche in which lung cell and tissue functions emerge. Implementing in vivo and ex vivo three-dimensional (3D) models more realistically mimicking the in vivo cell-extracellular matrix (ECM) crosstalk should facilitate a considerable leap towards better understanding lung diseases and thus in investigating new pharmacological tools. We are experiencing a revolution in our understanding of the cell types that deposit and remodel ECM in the lung, the dynamic spatial composition of the ECM and cell-cell interactions during disease, and the influence of ECM and cell-derived cues on lung cell biology. In concert, the ex vivo and in vitro models that are being used to examine the role of the 3D microenvironment of the cell in the lung are rapidly developing. The European Respiratory Society has partnered with Frontiers in Pharmacology to launch this research topic in conjunction with the ERS Research Seminar “Innovative 3D models for understanding mechanisms underlying lung diseases: powerful tools for translational research”.
