Kajian ini sebenarnya adalah lanjutan daripada kajian awal yang merupakan sebahagian daripada telaah berkaitan persuratkhabaran peribumi di Indonesia yang telah pun diterbitkan dengan judul The Vernacular Press and the Emergence of Modern Indonesian Consciousness. Kajian mengenai pers di Sumatera Barat secara khusus sengaja dilakukan justeru kerana sejarah persuratkhabaran Melayu di wilayah ini masih terlalu kurang diberikan perhatian. Setahu penulis, sehingga kini, tidak banyak yang dihasilkan mengenai sejarah pers di ranah Minangkabau, lebih-lebih lagi yang menyentuh jangka masa sebelum tercetusnya Perang Dunia Kedua. Percubaan awal yang pernah penulis lakukan pun hanya terbatas pada periode abad ke-19 dan sampai tahun 1913 iaitu sesuai dengan tema yang penulis pilih untuk kajian sejarah pers bagi seluruh Hindia Timur Belanda.

Peran penting pers dalam membentuk sejarah Minangkabau tak terbantahkan. Lahir dari tanggapan kritis terhadap perubahan zamannya, pers Minangkabau menampilkan mozaik situasi sosial, politik, ekonomi, dan budaya yang dihidupi oleh orang-orang pada zamannya. Kendati pers Minangkabau tergolong salah satu yang tertua di Indonesia, ternyata belum banyak tulisan yang secara mendalam mengangkat sejarah pers Minangkabau khususnya pada periode 1859–1950. Dalam konteks itulah buku ini mengambil perannya. Secara garis besar buku ini akan menunjukkan (1) latar belakang sejarah Minangkabau, adat-istiadat, dan budayanya; (2) sejarah pergerakan reformasi Islam di Minangkabau, yang bermula pada abad ke-8, ketika Islam diperkenalkan di Minangkabau oleh para pedagang dari Arab dan Gujarat; (3) sejarah pers Minangkabau yang diawali dengan pemakaian bahasa dan abjad Arab-Melayu, sampai masa pemakaian bahasa Melayu sepenuhnya oleh media; dan (4) perkembangan pers Islami hingga organisasi dan lembaga pendidikan yang menjadi lokasi awal produksi sebelum akhirnya benar-benar berbentuk penerbitan. Indonesian Islam is often portrayed as being intrinsically moderate by virtue of the role that mystical Sufism played in shaping its traditions.
