Whilst significant advances have been made in whole organismal proteomics approaches, many researchers still rely on combinations of tissue selection and subcellular prefractionation methods to reduce the complexity of protein extracts from plants prior to proteomic analysis. Often this will allow identification of many lower abundance proteins of the target proteome and it may involve the selection of specific organs, cell types or the isolation of specific subcellular components. These subcellular proteomes provide insight into functions following various treatments and also contribute to the wider understanding of the entire organismal proteome by cataloguing a series of sub-proteome contents. The aim of this Research Topic is to bring together knowledge of sub cellular components in different plant species to provide a basis for accelerated research. It aims to provide a mini-review for each proposed section that summarizes the current understanding of a particular proteome, with the anticipation that every 5 - 10 years we can update these definitive publications.

This is one of the first books to focus on the dynamic aspect of proteomes. The book introduces proteomics to the newcomer, reviews the theoretical aspects of proteomics and its state-of-the art technologies, along with a number of biological applications using "classical" proteomic technology. The book also presents a new concept, the Dynamome, or the expression of a comprehensive molecular set that participates in the whole dynamic process of a series of cellular events.

In the post-genomic era, several plant species have been sequenced and massive genomic information is now available which contributed to expand the development of novel technical strategies for the study of additional levels of biological information of plant species. This book focuses on the “omics” approaches together with systems analysis of several different plant species, which have revealed very interesting variations on the cellular responses at the protein, transcript and metabolite levels in response to changes environmental conditions. The volume covers recent technological advances in the area of “omics” and synthesizes recent findings of the field of plant “omics” and systems biology together along with techniques that can be applied for such studies.

Proteomics is the large-scale functional analysis of proteins extracted from intact organisms, tissues, individual cells, or cell compartments, at defined timepoints during development or under specific conditions. Plant Proteomics highlights the rapid progress in this field in plants, with emphasis on recent work in model plant species, subcellular organelles, and specific aspects of the plant life cycle such as signalling, reproduction and stress physiology. Diverse integrated approaches, including advanced proteomic techniques combined with functional genomics, bioinformatics, metabolomics and molecular cell biology, are presented in several chapters, making this book a valuable resource for a broad spectrum of readers ranging from teachers and advanced students to researchers.

This long-awaited first guide to sample preparation for proteomics studies overcomes a major bottleneck in this fast growing technique within the molecular life sciences. By addressing the topic from three different angles -- sample, method and aim of the study -- this practical reference has something for every proteomics researcher. Following an introduction to the field, the book looks at sample preparation for specific techniques and applications and finishes with a section on the preparation of sample types. For each method described, a summary of the pros and cons is given, as well as step-by-step protocols adaptable to any specific proteome analysis task.

The improvement of crop species has been a basic pursuit since cultivation began thousands of years ago. To feed an ever increasing world population will require a great increase in food production. Wheat, corn, rice, potato and few others are expected to lead as the most important crops in the world. Enormous efforts are made all over the world to document as well as use these resources. Everybody knows that the introgression of genes in wheat provided the foundation for the “Green Revolution”. Later also demonstrated the great impact that genetic resources have on production. Several factors are contributing to high plant performance under different environmental conditions, therefore an effective and complementary use of all available technological tools and resources is needed to meet the challenge.
