This iconoclastic book proposes that superconductivity is misunderstood in contemporary science and that this hampers scientific and technological development. Superconductivity is the ability of some metals to carry electric current without resistance at very low temperatures. Properly understanding superconductivity would facilitate finding materials that superconduct at room temperature, providing great benefits to society. The conventional BCS theory of superconductivity, developed in 1957 and awarded the Nobel Prize in 1972, is generally believed to fully explain the lower temperature 'conventional superconductors' but not the more recently discovered 'high temperature superconductors', for which the charge carriers are positive Holes rather than negative electrons. Instead, this book proposes the holistic view that Holes are responsible for superconductivity in all materials. It explains in simple terms how the most fundamental property of all superconductors, that they expel H-fields (the Meissner effect), can be understood with Hole carriers and cannot be explained by BCS. It describes the historical development of the conventional theory and why it went astray, and credits pre-BCS researchers for important insights that were forgotten after BCS but are in fact relevant for the proper understanding of superconductivity. The book's author, Jorge E Hirsch, is a renowned expert in the field of condensed matter physics who has published over 250 articles on the subject. He has developed the theory of 'Hole superconductivity', the focus of this book, over the last 30 years. He is also the inventor of the H-index, a bibliometric measure of scientific impact which, he admits in this book, fails to identify high scientific achievement in the field of superconductivity.

“Readers . . . are sure to enjoy [the] arguments and elegant presentation” of this “engaging” cultural survey by the controversial co-author of The Bell Curve (Kirkus Reviews). “At irregular times and in scattered settings, human beings have achieved great things. Human Accomplishment is about those great things, falling in the domains known as the arts and sciences, and the people who did them.’ So begins Charles Murray’s unique account of human excellence, from the age of Homer to our own time. Murray compiles inventories of the people who have been essential to the stories of literature, music, art, philosophy, and the sciences—a total of 4,002 men and women from around the world, ranked according to their eminence. The heart of Human Accomplishment is a series of enthralling descriptive chapters: on the giants in the arts and what sets them apart from the merely great. Charles Murray takes on some controversial questions. Why has accomplishment been so concentrated in Europe? Among men? Since 1400? He presents evidence that the rate of great accomplishment has been declining in the last century, asks what it means, and offers a rich framework for thinking about the conditions under which the human spirit has expressed itself most gloriously. “Well-written and informative.” —Publishers Weekly

Clinical Encounters In Sexuality Psychoanalytic Practice And Queer Theory written by Noreen Giffney and has been published by punctum books this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2017 with Psychology categories.
"What are the discourses of sexuality underpinning psychoanalysis, and how to they impact on clinical practices? Clinical Encounters in Sexuality makes an intervention into the fields of clinical psychoanalysis and sexuality studies and stages, but for the first time, a sustained clinical psychoanalytic engagement with queer theory. Themes focused on include identity, pleasure, perversion, ethics, and discourse. This interdisciplinary collection of essays includes thirty-two contributors working in queer theory and/or clinical psychoanalysis and from a number of different psychoanalytic traditions: Freudian, Kleinian, Lacanian, Independent, Jungian, and Relational. This book invites readers to enter into a self-reflective engagement with the text and their own views on sexuality, paying particular attention to the psychosocial attention underpinnings of sexuality as it exists and can play out in the consulting room"--Page 4 of cover.

Problems In Solid State Physics With Solutions written by Fuxiang Han and has been published by World Scientific Publishing Company this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2011-10-31 with Science categories.
This book provides a practical approach to consolidate one's acquired knowledge or to learn new concepts in solid state physics through solving problems. It contains 300 problems on various subjects of solid state physics. The problems in this book can be used as homework assignments in an introductory or advanced course on solid state physics for undergraduate or graduate students. It can also serve as a desirable reference book to solve typical problems and grasp mathematical techniques in solid state physics. In practice, it is more fascinating and rewarding to learn a new idea or technique through solving challenging problems rather than through reading only. In this aspect, this book is not a plain collection of problems but it presents a large number of problem-solving ideas and procedures, some of which are valuable to practitioners in condensed matter physics.

Wet Granular Matter A Truly Complex Fluid written by Stephan Herminghaus and has been published by World Scientific this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2013-08-29 with Science categories.
This is a monograph written for the young and advanced researcher who is entering the field of wet granular matter and keen to understand the basic physical principles governing this state of soft matter. It treats wet granulates as an instance of a ternary system, consisting of the grains, a primary, and a secondary fluid. After addressing wetting phenomena in general and outlining the basic facts on dry granular systems, a chapter on basic mechanisms and their effects is dedicated to every region of the ternary phase diagram. Effects of grain shape and roughness are considered as well. Rather than addressing engineering aspects such as existing books on this topic do, the book aims to provide a generalized framework suitable for those who want to understand these systems on a more fundamental basis.

Theory Of Magnetism Application To Surface Physics written by Hung-the Diep and has been published by World Scientific Publishing Company this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2013-12-24 with Science categories.
The book is intended for graduate students and researchers who wish to master the main properties of magnetic materials in the bulk state and at the nanometric scale such as for thin films and multilayers. This textbook provides the theories and methods of simulation to study and to understand these properties in an explicit manner. In the first part of the book, the quantum theory of magnetism is presented while the second part of the book is devoted to the application of the theory of magnetism to surface physics. Numerous examples covering typical cases in ferromagnets, antiferromagnets, ferrimagnets, helimagnets, and frustrated spin systems are all illustrated. Fundamental surface effects are shown and discussed. Lastly, the spin transport is described — in which the basic formulation of the Boltzmann's equation is recalled — and the recent methods of Monte Carlo simulation to deal with the spin resistivity are explained. This book contains a large number of detailed solutions for the problems given in each chapter to help readers discover new related phenomena and applications, as well as an appendix on elements of statistical physics included at the end to make the book self-contained.

The monograph reviews various aspects of electronic properties of Dirac and Weyl semimetals. After a brief discussion of 2D Dirac semimetals, a comprehensive review of 3D materials is given. The description starts from an overview of the topological properties and symmetries of Dirac and Weyl semimetals. In addition, several low-energy models of Dirac and Weyl quasiparticles are presented. The key ab initio approaches and material realizations are given. The monograph includes detailed discussions of the surface Fermi arcs, anomalous transport properties, and collective modes of Dirac and Weyl semimetals. Superconductivity in these materials is briefly addressed.
