Superhero play among preschool children appears to be quite different from socio-dramatic play. While exhibiting characteristics of socio-dramatic play, superhero play does not facilitate the development of social or verbal skills. Observations of television programs indicated that superhero play provides little opportunity for verbal reasoning, problem solving, talking things out, or compromising. Observations of children in groups who were engaged in superhero play revealed that such play had very little story line, was interruptive and aggressive, and reduced the likelihood of the emergence of other forms of behavior. In addition, threatening environmental conditions seemed to affect the timing of children's superhero play. Preschool teachers, when surveyed, indicated that such play was difficult to redirect or build into constructive experiences for children. Some techniques for addressing the superhero phenomenon are advocated in the literature. Children engage in superhero play to alleviate fear or because they have limited opportunities for truly socio-dramatic play. In these cases the environment should be stabilized and opportunities provided. When children's play includes a balance between superhero and socio-dramatic elements, no intervention may be needed. Individual preschool children appearing to be immersed in a superhero character should be viewed in terms of how their needs are met by such play, the extent to which superhero play is used, how alternative experiences might better meet those needs, and whether intervention is needed. The present study examined the effects of superhero materials on boys' physically active and imaginative play in a group of middle-class preschool children. Research findings have indicated that media related play, more specifically superhero and rough and tumble may be associated with aggressive and violent behaviour, as well as limited activity with regards to role play. Fifty-eight boys between the ages of 4 and 5 years (M = 54.95 mos., SD = 5.28 mos.) from middle SES backgrounds who attended day care full-time participated in the study. Eighteen preschool educators, as well as fifty-eight parents participated in the study. The participants (male dyads) were observed for the frequency and quality of roles, themes, level of physical activity in their play, as well as aggression. Each dyad participated in two play sessions, one including superhero materials (media related) one nonsuperhero (non-media related). The parents and educators were asked to respond to questionnaires pertaining to boy's play choices and behaviours. Each dyad's (n = 29) play behaviour was coded for the type and number of pretend play roles, themes, amount of physical activity, as well as aggression in both toy conditions. It was found that the male dyads engaged in more character/fictive (media related) roles in the superhero condition than the nonsuperhero condition. Finally, dyads were found to be more physically active in the nonsuperhero condition than the superhero condition and no aggression or violence was associated with the play.

Systematic efforts at the Arizona State Child Study Laboratory were successful in replacing children's undesirable superhero play with other types of sociodramatic play. Teachers found superhero play undesirable because it was aggressive and noisy and was accompanied by an increase in random activity. Observations indicated that superhero play had all six elements of sociodramatic play discussed by Smilansky but did not fully develop them. Specifically, such play was limited in the roles adopted by children, did not build on past experience or encourage sharing ideas through language, and emphasized conflicts that were resolved by physical aggression or "flying away." However, the popularity of superhero play showed that it met real needs for active play and for expressing angry and aggressive feelings. Other sociodramatic play was encouraged by gradually introducing costumes, props, and materials around a theme such as transportation or a grocery store, and by preparing the children through field trips, discussion, and stories. The teacher's general role was to deliberately enrich and change the environment and to suggest techniques for getting along with others if conflicts arose. However, the teacher had to supplement her role with children who depended on a superhero identity to compensate for their lack of self-esteem and social skills by directing them into new activities.(CB)
