This report presents more than 100 tables of data exploring how full time college students in the United States view distance learning, how many such courses that they have taken and plan to take, and how they view their level of preparedness for DL courses. The report also presents data on how students view DL courses compared to traditional courses and how many study in colleges that offer DL courses. The data in the report is based on a representative sample of more than 400 full time college students in the United States. Data is broken out by 16 criteria including gender, grade point average, major field of study, income level of students and type, size of college, and mean SAT acceptance score of colleges, among other variables. The report is designed to give college administrators, educational researchers and others benchmarks on student use of distance learning and the student demographics of DL use and future use.

This report summarizes the highlights and presents statistical data (two-thirds of the report) from a national survey of 35,478 full-time college and university faculty members at 392 two-year colleges, four-year colleges and universities, carried out in the fall and winter of 1989-90. The 200-question survey focused heavily on how faculty members spend their time, how they interact with students, their preferred methods of teaching and examining students, their perceptions of the institutional climate, and their primary sources of stress and satisfaction. Among the findings were the following: (1) although 98 percent gave teaching a high priority, 28 percent preferred research over teaching and 27 percent felt that institutional pressures to do research and publish interfered with their teaching; (2) half the faculty in private universities spent more than 12 hours per week doing research and writing, compared to less than 20 percent of faculty in 4-year colleges and 3 percent in the community faculty in four-year colleges and 3 percent in the community colleges; (3) fully one quarter of the four-year college faculty and an article in a scholarly journal; (4) faculty were most satisfied with their autonomy and independence and job security; and (5) compared to their private counterparts, professors in public institutions gave higher priority to preparing students for employment and conducting research. The first broad survey of the history of urban higher education in America. Today, a majority of American college students attend school in cities. But throughout the nineteenth and much of the twentieth centuries, urban colleges and universities faced deep hostility from writers, intellectuals, government officials, and educators who were concerned about the impact of cities, immigrants, and commuter students on college education. In Universities and Their Cities, Steven J. Diner explores the roots of American colleges’ traditional rural bias. Why were so many people, including professors, uncomfortable with nonresident students? How were the missions and activities of urban universities influenced by their cities? And how, improbably, did much-maligned urban universities go on to profoundly shape contemporary higher education across the nation? Surveying American higher education from the early nineteenth century to the present, Diner examines the various ways in which universities responded to the challenges offered by cities. In the years before World War II, municipal institutions struggled to “build character” in working class and immigrant students. In the postwar era, universities in cities grappled with massive expansion in enrollment, issues of racial equity, the problems of “disadvantaged” students, and the role of higher education in addressing the “urban crisis.” Over the course of the twentieth century, urban higher education institutions greatly increased the use of the city for teaching, scholarly research on urban issues, and inculcating civic responsibility in students. In the final decades of the century, and moving into the twenty-first century, university location in urban areas became increasingly popular with both city-dwelling students and prospective resident students, altering the long tradition of anti-urbanism in American higher education. Drawing on the archives and publications of higher education organizations and foundations, Universities and Their Cities argues that city universities brought about today’s commitment to universal college access by reaching out to marginalized populations. Diner shows how these institutions pioneered the development of professional schools and PhD programs. Finally, he considers how leaders of urban higher education continuously debated the definition and role of an urban university. Ultimately, this book is a considered and long overdue look at the symbiotic impact of these two great American institutions: the city and the university.
