This book addresses the properties of particles in colloidal suspensions. It has a focus on particle aggregates and the dependency of their physical behaviour on morphological parameters. For this purpose, relevant theories and methodological tools are reviewed and applied to selected examples. The book is divided into four main chapters. The first of them introduces important measurement techniques for the determination of particle size and interfacial properties in colloidal suspensions. A further chapter is devoted to the physico-chemical properties of colloidal particles—highlighting the interfacial phenomena and the corresponding interactions between particles. The book’s central chapter examines the structure-property relations of colloidal aggregates. This comprises concepts to quantify size and structure of aggregates, models and numerical tools for calculating the (light) scattering and hydrodynamic properties of aggregates, and a discussion on van-der-Waals and double layer interactions between aggregates. It is illustrated how such knowledge may significantly enhance the characterisation of colloidal suspensions. The final part of the book refers to the information, ideas and concepts already presented in order to address technical aspects of the preparation of colloidal suspensions—in particular the performance of relevant dispersion techniques and the stability of colloidal suspensions.

The Langevin Equation written by William Coffey and has been published by World Scientific this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1996 with Mathematics categories.

The book is suitable for a lecture course on the theory of Brownian motion, being based on final year undergraduate lectures given at Trinity College, Dublin. Topics that are discussed include: white noise; the Chapman-Kolmogorov equation ? Kramers-Moyal expansion; the Langevin equation; the Fokker-Planck equation; Brownian motion of a free particle; spectral density and the Wiener-Khintchin theorem ? Brownian motion in a potential application to the Josephson effect, ring laser gyro; Brownian motion in two dimensions; harmonic oscillators; itinerant oscillators; linear response theory; rotational Brownian motion; application to loss processes in dielectric and ferrofluids; superparamagnetism and nonlinear relaxation processes. As the first elementary book on the Langevin equation approach to Brownian motion, this volume attempts to fill in all the missing details which students find particularly hard to comprehend from the fundamental papers contained in the Dover reprint ? Selected Papers on Noise and Stochastic Processes, ed. N Wax (1954) ? together with modern applications particularly to relaxation in ferrofluids and polar dielectrics.

PRINCIPLES OF MODERN CHEMISTRY has dominated the honors and high mainstream general chemistry courses and is considered the standard for the course. The fifth edition is a substantial revision that maintains the rigor of previous editions but reflects the exciting modern developments taking place in chemistry today. Authors David W. Oxtoby and H. P. Gillis provide a unique approach to learning chemical principles that emphasizes the total scientific process'from observation to application'placing general chemistry into a complete perspective for serious-minded science and engineering students. Chemical principles are illustrated by the use of modern materials, comparable to equipment found in the scientific industry. Students are therefore exposed to chemistry and its applications beyond the classroom. This text is perfect for those instructors who are looking for a more advanced general chemistry textbook.

Particle Deposition and Aggregation: Measurement, Modelling and Simulation describes how particle deposition and aggregation can be measured, modeled, and simulated in a systematic manner. It brings together the necessary disciplines of colloid and surface chemistry, hydrodynamics, experimental methods, and computational methods to present a unified approach to this problem. The book is divided into four parts. Part I presents the theoretical principles governing deposition and aggregation phenomena, including a discussion of the forces that exist between particles and the hydrodynamic factors that control the movement of the particles and suspending fluid. Part II introduces methods for modeling the processes, first at a simple level (e.g. single particle-surface, single particle-single particle interactions in model flow conditions) and then describes the simulation protocols and computation tools which may be employed to describe more complex (multiple-particle interaction) systems. Part III summarizes the experimental methods of quantifying aggregating and depositing systems and concludes with a comparison of experimental results with those predicted using simple theoretical predictions. Part IV is largely based on illustrative examples to demonstrate the application of simulation and modeling methods to particle filtration, aggregation, and transport processes. This book should be useful to graduates working in process and environmental engineering research or industrial development at a postgraduate level, and to scientists who wish to extend their knowledge into more realistic process conditions in which the fluid hydrodynamics and other complicating factors must be accommodated.

Colloids are submicron particles that are ubiquitous in nature (milk, clay, blood) and industrial products (paints, drilling fluids, food). In recent decades it has become clear that adding depletants such as polymers or small colloids to colloidal dispersions allows one to tune the interactions between the colloids and in this way control the stability, structure and rheological properties of colloidal dispersions. This book offers a concise introduction to the fundamentals of depletion effects and their influence on the phase behavior of colloidal dispersions. Throughout the book, conceptual explanations are accompanied by experimental and computer simulation results. From the review by Kurt Binder: "They have succeeded in writing a monograph that is a very well balanced compromise between a very pedagogic introduction, suitable for students and other newcomers, and reviews of the advanced research trends in the field. Thus each chapter contains many and up to date references, but in the initial sections of the chapters, there are suggested exercises which will help the interested reader to recapitulate the main points of the treatment and to deepen his understanding of the subject. Only elementary knowledge of statistical thermodynamics is needed as a background for understanding the derivations presented in this book; thus this text is suitable also for advanced teaching purposes, useful of courses which deal with the physics for soft condensed matter. There does not yet exist any other book with a similar scope..... The readability of this book is furthermore enhanced by a list of symbols, and index of keywords, and last not least by a large number of figures, including many pedagogic sketches which were specifically prepared for this book. Thus, this book promises to be very useful for students and related applied sciences alike." Eur. Phys. J. E (2015) 38: 73
