Der dritte Band in der Reihe »System der Vernunft. Kant und der Deutsche Idealismus« untersucht die komplexen Debatten um den Systembegriff in der Philosophie um 1800. Um 1800 bricht die Debatte um die Möglichkeit eines Systems der Philosophie nach Kant vehement aus. Schleiermacher behauptet als Theologe seinen Platz auf der Bühne der Philosophie, und Friedrich Schlegel wendet sich der Sprachphilosophie zu. Die dichten Gesprächszusammenhänge des vorausgehenden Jahrzehnts haben sich verloren, die Protagonisten des Aufbruchs von ehedem gehen separate Wege. Gleichwohl – das Denken im Horizont von Systemkonzeptionen, das mancherlei Kritik erfuhr, wird weiterbewegt. Wo der Gesprächsfaden nicht fortgeführt wird, erlauben die gedruckten Werke eine Fortführung der Diskussion und Kritik. Dem genauen Hinsehen zeigen sich Veränderungen in den Gesamtentwürfen, zeigen sich neue Synthesen. Die vielfältigen Bewegungen der Systementwürfe im fraglichen Zeitraum, der Verdichtung hier, der Diffusion dort, werden in den Beiträgen beleuchtet.

Trifft Jacobis unphilosophische Systemkritik auch Hegels Metaphysik absoluter Negativität? Dessen System gilt als Höhepunkt systematisch-systemischen Philosophierens. Als solches führt es ein Denken zur Vollendung, dessen Kern darin besteht, Inbegriff von Begründung zu sein. Somit aber besetzt es den gesamten Raum des Denkbaren, in dem schon alle Kritik im und am Denken durchgeführt ist. Sinnvolle Kritik am System scheint unmöglich, ohne dieses zugleich zu affirmieren oder aber selbst der Sinnlosigkeit anheim zu fallen. Jacobi unternimmt den Versuch, einen Modus der Kritik zu finden, der einerseits aus der Systemlogik selbst erwächst, zugleich aber darin nicht verhaftet bleibt. Ihm gelingt dieses Kunststück, indem er akkurate Rekonstruktion mit lebensweltlicher Erfahrung verschränkt und sich der Systemlogik mit einem Sprung entzieht. Das Sprunggeschehen der sogenannten Unphilosophie zu rekonstruieren und nun auch mit dem System des reifen Hegel zu konfrontieren, unternimmt diese Untersuchung. Die Leitfrage lautet dabei, ob Jacobi auch aus Hegels elaboriertem System gesprungen wäre oder aber der erweiterte Systembegriff seine Kritik obsolet gemacht hat.

Hope is understood to be a significant part of human experience, including for motivating behaviour, promoting happiness, and justifying a conception of the self as having agency. Yet substantial gaps remain regarding the development of the concept of hope in the history of philosophy. This collection addresses this gap by reconstructing and analysing a variety of approaches to hope in late 18th- and 19th-century German philosophy. In 1781, Kant's idea of a “rational hope” shifted the terms of discussion about hope and its role for human self-understanding.
