Ke’s book examines and reflects on English education in Taiwan from a global English perspective, starting with a discussion on globalization and global Englishes. English education in Taiwan has gone through various major transformations since the intensification of globalization after the 1990s. On one hand, children start to learn English ever earlier while on the other hand, the curriculum and materials in the vocational schools and at the tertiary level become diversified to meet various specific needs of English use. Internationalization of education has brought increasing numbers of international students, and the roles of English in Taiwan are changing constantly with the dynamic environment, from a foreign language to a lingua franca, medium of instruction, and an international language. In his book, the author documents the historical development of education and the roles of English in Taiwan before reviewing curriculum reforms and changes in the past half century. He then presents teachers' and students’ perceptions on global Englishes. He proposes global Englishes' pedagogies and his views on what changes can be made to textbooks, learning materials, entrance exams, translation, and the linguistic environment. Practical suggestions to English education in Taiwan in the globalizing context serve as a tentative conclusion for the book. Offering insights into English education and its relationship with globalization, Ke’s book will be useful to researchers and students in the fields of global Englishes and English education as well as offering practical pedagogical suggestions for English educators around the world.

Learning English and Chinese is becoming increasingly important to the prospects of young people. This book compares English as a Foreign Language teaching in Taiwan with Chinese as a Foreign Language education in England in order to highlight how classroom activities are embedded within multiple settings, including ethnic or other social group cultures, family and community resources and school visions or goals. The book illustrates how in Taiwan different ethnic groups recognise, access and value English language learning to varying extents. Its findings illuminate why some ethnic groups are highly motivated to learn English and are able to gain privileged economic positions in the job market. In England, access to Chinese is marked by social class, and the book argues that this could augment an ‘educational apartheid’ that already exists in language teaching in secondary schools, thereby exacerbating existing inequality.

"This paper examines some of the cultural influences which inhibit the learning of English by Taiwanese students, who are under pressure in Taiwan to pass the International Exam. Teachers feel that they must teach to the exam as parents and administrators require, at the expense of learning natural language. Other barriers to using the most current methodologies are cultural, and include "loss of face," the traditional role of the teacher, and cultural differences in the languages themselves. Understanding world views and cultural issues is an important part of developing a culture-sensitive curriculum. Recommendations for those preparing to teach in Taiwan are offered by two teachers who have taught there: Veronica Petty (Shu Pei-Ling) from Taiwan and her husband, Tim Petty, from the United States."--Document.

English education starts with grade three in elementary school since 2005 in Taiwan and there are several versions of textbooks available for the elementary school level. This study adopts eight textbooks of two versions from two different publishers. The purpose of the study aims to investigate the teaching textbooks, to analyze the different English textbooks used in elementary school grade three and four in Taiwan and mainly focuses on the content of the textbooks concerning contents, vocabulary, sentences pattern, and text length. The researcher also investigates whether the textbooks fulfill the One to Nine Curriculum Guidelines of Ministry of Education or not. The results of the study showed that there are five differences and two similarities between two versions. First, the version A and B are different in the content sequence in four volumes of two versions. Second, the culture & festivals units are different between two versions. Third, the sentence patterns are different in two versions. Fourth, the version B is more than the version A in the sum of the vocabulary quantity. Finally, the version A text length is more than that of the version B. Theme of each unit and the theme of festivals in two versions are similar. Both versions fulfill One to Nine Curriculum Guidelines. The guidelines include the contents (themes), relating to the students' daily lives, and also the culture & festivals. This study might serve as reference for material designers, English as a foreign language (EFL) teachers, and textbook editors.

English globally connects the modern world, bridges the gap between different people from different countries and enables greater mutual understanding between different ethnic groups. Its worldwide significance is well-expressed by the eagerness with which non-English countries adapt their educational language policies. The language development of a country plays an important role with respect to its present/historical background and cultural characteristics. The implementation of a new national language policy would change its language ecology and cultural self-understanding. I take a closer look on the relation between language policies and culture, regarding the impact of such policies on the cultures of Taiwan. Using the historical examples of Vietnam and Singapore can be demonstrated that the imposition of a new language on the existing vernaculars in a society creates cultural problems of identification of an ethnic group under any form of foreign dominance. Linguistically speaking, the new situation with global English is conquering Taiwan and compelling children to solve the dilemma between the cultural identity and the alienating language policy.
