Issues In Bioethics And The Concept Of Scale written by William Andrew Cook and has been published by Peter Lang this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2008 with Business & Economics categories.

Issues in Bioethics and the Concept of Scale arose from the author's deep and committed interest in ecology, moral philosophy, and medicine, and how they are interrelated. William A. Cook expands on the recognition that spatial and temporal scale characteristics are factors in the understanding and modeling of ecological systems and in decision-making around ecological and environmental issues, and introduces this dynamic to the field of bioethics. The concept of scale, from hierarchy theory as it is used in ecology to deal with the complexity and interrelationships of systems, is explored and identified as a factor and potential source of conflict in the field of bioethics. This notion of scale is conceptually useful for considering the complexity of some bioethical issues.

Taking Sides: Clashing Views on Controversial Bioethical Issues, 10th edition, is a debate-style reader designed to introduce students to controversies in bioethics. The readings, which represent the arguments of leading philosophers and social commentators, reflect a variety of viewpoints and have been selected for their liveliness and substance and because of their value in a debate framework. For each issue, the editor provides a concise introduction and postscript summary. The introduction sets the stage for the debate as it is argued in the "yes" and "no" readings, and the postscript briefly reviews the opposing views and suggests additional readings on the controversial issue under discussion. By requiring students to analyze opposing viewpoints and reach considered judgments, Taking Sides actively develops students' critical thinking skills. It is this development of critical thinking skills that is the ultimate purpose of each of the volumes in the widely acclaimed Taking Sides program. Book jacket.

Research on gene drive systems is rapidly advancing. Many proposed applications of gene drive research aim to solve environmental and public health challenges, including the reduction of poverty and the burden of vector-borne diseases, such as malaria and dengue, which disproportionately impact low and middle income countries. However, due to their intrinsic qualities of rapid spread and irreversibility, gene drive systems raise many questions with respect to their safety relative to public and environmental health. Because gene drive systems are designed to alter the environments we share in ways that will be hard to anticipate and impossible to completely roll back, questions about the ethics surrounding use of this research are complex and will require very careful exploration. Gene Drives on the Horizon outlines the state of knowledge relative to the science, ethics, public engagement, and risk assessment as they pertain to research directions of gene drive systems and governance of the research process. This report offers principles for responsible practices of gene drive research and related applications for use by investigators, their institutions, the research funders, and regulators.

Ethical Dilemmas in Allied Health is a textbook that presents the theories and principles of ethical behavior as they arise in the context of concrete moral dilemmas in health care settings. Using case studies that draw learners into a real-life contemporary dilemma, the author clearly assists the allied health student in understanding the various viewpoints that come to bear on the situation as well as ethical principles that the student can refer to in making decisions about the case. By drawing on both the rich literature in the ethics field from all major religious and medical groups as well as her extensive experience with ethics committees in a wide range of health care organizations, the author has written a book that is current, practical, readable and has the ability to engage the reader.
