Excerpt from Talks on Teaching Literature Few earnest teachers of literature have escaped those black moments when it seems perfectly evident that the one thing sure in connection with the whole business is that literature cannot be taught. If they are of sensitive conscience they are likely to have wondered at times whether it is honest to go on pretending to give instruction in a branch in which instruction is so obviously impossible. The more they consider, the more evident it is that if a pupil really learns anything in literature, - as distinguished from learning about literature, - he does it himself; and they cannot fail to see that as an art literature necessarily partakes of the nature of all art, the quality of being inexpressible and unexplainable in any language except its own. The root of whatever difficulty exists in fulfilling the requirements of modern courses of training which have to do with literature is just this fact. Excerpt from On History and the Study of History: Three Lectures The originals of the following Lectures were given to my own classes, composed of young men from eighteen to twenty-five years of age. In preparing them for a wider audience, I have given them a somewhat greater extension; but as they contain nothing which I either have not said, or might not have said, to their first hearers, I have preferred to retain their original form. For the opinions they contain I alone am responsible. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Two Lectures Introductory to the Study of Poetry That is no doubt an extreme case, but it is all the more useful as an illustration. It helps us to realize how potent a faculty is the endow ment of the dramatist, which can pierce through human appearance to its essential qualities. Can conceive by a sure instinct how, in given circum stances, the given character must act, and can represent it to us, because it is vivid to him, in all the verisimilitude of essential detail. Such imagination is plainly one large and special side of the faculty of seeing things out of their commonplace associations. As a branch of the same head would rank the still rarer power of conceiving types of character, that for certain reasons have no actual existence in the world we know, such types as Shakespeare's Ariel and Caliban and Puck. Studies In European Literature written by S. Mallarme and has been published by Forgotten Books this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2018-02-20 with Literary Collections categories.

Excerpt from Studies in European Literature: Being the Taylorian Lectures 1889-1899 Nearly a generation has passed since a distinguished son of Oxford, Mr. Matthew Arnold, declared that the chief need of our time - and especially the need of our own country - was a truer and more enlightened criticism. He did not speak merely of literature; he meant that we needed a fresh current of ideas about life in its various provinces. But he included the province of literature, the importance of which, and especially of poetry, no man estimated more highly than did Mr. Arnold. And as the essential prelude to a better criticism, he made his gallant, and far from unsuccessful, effort to disturb our national self-com placency, to make us feel that Philistia is not a land which is very far off; he made the experiment, which he regarded as in the best sense patriotic, to rearrange for our uses the tune of Rule Britannia in a minor key. His contribution to our self-knowledge was a valuable one, if wisely used. The elegant lamentations of the prophet over his people in captivity to the Philistines were more than elegant, they were inspired by a fine ideal of intellectual freedom, and were animated by a courageous h0pe that the ideal might be, in part at least. Excerpt from Talks to Writers European literature with which his temperament on the whole allied him; Shelley and Byron, Hugo and Baudelaire were comparatively learned men, steeped in old literature, and their technique was not an improvisation but a turning of familiar in struments to new uses. Moreover, the great lib eraring geniuses of the nineteenth century had a training of the mind which gave them powers of observation such as the improviser can hardly possess. It is the mind that sees, rather than the eye; the right kind of reading and the right sort of meditation will do more to cure us of blind ness than even an adjustment of our glasses. Of Hearn himself, whose eyesight was cruelly handi capped, it is said that his acuteness of observation amazed his companions, as indeed it will always astonish his readers. He was disciplined in the two approaches to his art, in the methods that older masters had used, and in that keenness of sight which is a skill, as I said, 'less of the eye than of the mind. Excerpt from On the Study of Words These lectures will not, I trust, be found anywhere to have left out of sight seriously, or for long, the peculiar needs of those for whom they were originally intended, and to whom they were primarily ad dressed. I am conscious indeed, here and there, of a certain departure from my first intention, having been in part seduced to this by a circumstance which I had not in the least contemplated when I obtained permission to deliver them, by finding, namely, that I should have other hearers besides the pupils of the training school. Some matter adapted for those rather than for these I was thus led to introduce which afterward I was unwilling in preparing for the press, to remove on the contrary adding to it rather.
