Moreover, the great lib eraring geniuses of the nineteenth century had a training of the mind which gave them powers of observation such as the improviser can hardly possess. It is the mind that sees, rather than the eye; the right kind of reading and the right sort of meditation will do more to cure us of blind ness than even an adjustment of our glasses. Of Hearn himself, whose eyesight was cruelly handi capped, it is said that his acuteness of observation amazed his companions, as indeed it will always astonish his readers. He was disciplined in the two approaches to his art, in the methods that older masters had used, and in that keenness of sight which is a skill, as I said, 'less of the eye than of the mind. Excerpt from Talks on Writing English: First Series These talks were given in the autumn of 1894 as a course on Advanced English Composition in the Lowell Free Classes, and that they are now printed is largely due to the fact that they were so well received by those who then heard them. In preparing them, I consulted whatever books upon composition came to my hand. I examined some with profit, some with pleasure, and some, it must be confessed, not wholly without amusement, or even impatience. Doubtless, I owe something to many of these books; but I am not conscious of much obligation to any save the "Principles of Rhetoric," by Professor A. S. Hill, "English Composition," by Professor Barrett Wendell, and "English Prose," by Professor John Earle. I have conscientiously endeavored to make the lectures as practical as possible, stating as clearly as I could those things which would have been most helpful to me had I read and heeded them twenty years ago. Excerpt from Lectures on the English Comic Writers It is undeniable that neither his most intimate friends nor his most sympathetic critics have spoken or written of William Hazlitt with enthusiastic abandon or with spontaneous affection. Men of far less ability than he, and of more limited outlook, have inspired devotion in their lifetime and stirred the pulses of posterity. His failure in this respect is the more remarkable because "the man's writings are himself. He does not summarize or pigeon-hole the matter; but goes into it, then and there, before your eyes and takes you with him. You see the picture of which he is writing, you take up the line of argument he is defending, you think out the scheme he is elaborating, you study the author he is criticizing. Your mind shares the processes upon which he is engaged, and becomes lost in them. You read with his gusto or his prejudice, you reason with his vigour, and draw conclusions upon the basis of his experience." In other words, Hazlitt, despite his cynical estimate of the public, actually wrote with a keen sense of personal enjoyment that one would expect to have proved infectious. Yet we think, much and often, of what he has written; little and seldom of the man himself. The "Lectures on the Comic Writers" bear out our conclusion in a marked degree.
