Seminar paper from the year 2011 in the subject Didactics for the subject English - Pedagogy, Literature Studies, grade: 1,3, University of Paderborn, language: English, abstract: Literature is one of the most important features of the English-as-Foreign-Language-classroom (EFL). It can be taught through different methods and genres. In the course of the seminar we got to know some of these methods which help to design interesting and creative lessons. Since there was the introduction of a certain standard of education in 2003, having the function of improving the culture of learning in secondary schools, it becomes obvious that literary texts are an essential part of the education plan. Education is not seen as retrievable knowledge anymore. It is looked at in its entirety. Therefore, the school should teach pupils to be independent und to develop their own personality. Of course, this also means thinking over the old teaching methods and pay attention to interdisciplinary factors. This aspect is especially important as English - apart from German - can be considered the most important subject concerning the fields of creativity and communication. Additionally, the acquirement of a foreign language leads to intercultural competence, identity formation, change of perspective and tolerance. Thus, it is also particularly literature that pays attention to these goals. In this term paper I will focus on the teaching of novels and their impact on language teaching. For this reason I will firstly answer the questions why literature is important in EFL-classrooms and examine which kind of texts are appropriate for teaching. Afterwards, I will talk briefly about the reception of novels with the help of pre-, while and post-reading phases. Finally, all these theoretical aspects will be part of the last chapter, where the young adult novel “Gracey” by James Moloney will serve as an example. There will be a lesson outline to demonstrate how the previous points could be put into practice and to display which competences are most acquired and improved.

Seminar paper from the year 2021 in the subject Didactics - English - Pedagogy, Literature Studies, grade: 1,7, University of Duisburg-Essen, language: English, abstract: The question that arises is how and why literature survives and has still its unique weight in the 21st century. This work is structured in several parts discussing what influence literature has on pupils in the EFL classroom. This seminar paper begins by giving a basic overview of the use of literature and why literature remains so successful. This is followed by the criteria of why certain literature is chosen and the challenges that may occur when teaching literature. After that, it will be discussed which influence literature has on the reading and writing skills of pupils in the EFL classroom. The young adult novel “The Hate U Give” by Angie Thomas will serve as an example, which will firstly be presented briefly in its outline and its fundamental themes. Later on, this novel will be analysed regarding the impact it has on pupils in the EFL classroom and to what extent this example might or might not help them to understand America’s society concerning recent themes as racism, police violence or identity. The aim of this term paper is to develop an appropriate answer to the question why literature is still so prominent and popular nowadays. The other important aspect and the aim this paper lays its focus on is how literature is used to reconstruct social values and norms or to understand a foreign society.

Seminar paper from the year 2007 in the subject American Studies - Literature, grade: 1,3, University of Münster, course: Teaching Short Stories in the EFL-Classroom, language: English, abstract: The short story has its origins in traditional oral storytelling. Many of the world’s greatest literary classics such as El Cid, La Chanson de Roland, Beowulf or the Odyssey were originally orally transmitted. In most cases, the story has undergone many modifications in the course of the telling processes; still they are today’s primary testimonies for language, history, culture and people of the past. They were told in rhyming and therefore functioned as a mnemonic device for easier recall . In Europe, the short story began to evolve from oral storytelling in the early 14th century with Chaucer’s Canterbury Tales and Boccacio’s Decamerone, books consisting of individual short stories within a larger frame story. Only in the 19th century, modern short stories began to be considered a proper genre. Print magazines represented a strong market for short fiction, theories related to this began to surge, as for example, Edgar Allan Poe’s The Philosophy of Composition. Nowadays, the number of commercial magazines publishing short stories has decreased but they appear to have found their place in online publications. Today, reading has become a minor activity in people’s lives with globalisation, technological progress and a fast-growing media industry. In schools, pupil’s interest is increasingly difficult to stimulate , especially when it comes to literature in the English Second Language classroom. Students are used to fast information input without necessarily having to become active themselves, they lose concentration easily when the learning process takes too long or they lose patience when they do not understand right away. The use of short stories in the English Foreign Language classroom is one possibility to respond to this problem teachers of foreign languages have to face. Therefore, this paper is going to define the genre of the short story as such to create a basis for the following presentation of the benefits of short stories for the North Rhine-Westphalian English Language Classroom. In the next step, the curricula and guidelines are taken into consideration in order to develop some ideas on how to implement The Machine that Won the War by Isaac Asimov in class. These will be integrated into a lesson plan with several activities around the story. There are several theoretical works dealing with the lecture of short stories, starting with Poe’s work mentioned above, Allen Walter’s The Short Story in English, Charles E. May’s The Short Story – The Reality Artifice or Frank Myszor’s The Modern Short Story. Some articles have been written e.g., by Rüdiger Ahrens Die bisherige Rolle der Short Story im Englischunterricht der Sekundarstufe II, dealing with the use of short stories as a way of teaching literature. Most has certainly been written about didactics of English in German classrooms such as Wolfgang Gehring’s Englische Fachdidaktik Eine Einführung, Englisch lernen und lehren, Didaktik des Englischunterrichts by Johannes – P. Timm or Egon Werlich’s Praktische Methodik des Fremsprachenunterrichts mit authentischen Texten.

Seminar paper from the year 2015 in the subject Didactics for the subject English - Pedagogy, Literature Studies, grade: 1,0, University of Duisburg-Essen (Department of Anglophone Studies), course: Module F Seminar: Materials, Methods, Media and More: Differentiation in the Language Classroom, language: English, abstract: The development of new digital technologies has changed the use of media for teaching in schools considerably. But despite that, literature has not lost its importance. It is still one of the most important mediums for language learning purposes in the English as a foreign language (EFL) classroom today. Furthermore, literary material is not limited to the classical texts anymore. This becomes obvious when having a look into contemporary teaching English as a foreign language (TEFL) school books, in which a relevant amount of the presented material is based on literary texts not belonging to the canon. The question, however, is how literature is used for language learning purposes and why it is so commonly used in TEFL contexts. Therefore, this paper aims at examining the use of literature for language learning purposes in the EFL classroom on the basis of one specific textbook material that makes use of a literary text. The material is taken from the school book “Pathway. Lese- und Arbeitsbuch Englisch zur Einführung in die gymnasiale Oberstufe”, which was published by Schöningh in the year 2014 and is designed for grade 10 at a grammar school (Gymnasium). The literary text itself is an extract from the popular fiction young adult novel “The Namesake” by Jumpa Lahiri and together with the responding tasks and classroom activities it shall serve as the basis for the analysis of how literature or more specifically this chosen material can support the students' language learning effectively. In order to evaluate the material, it is, however, necessary to start with a brief description of current modern principles of foreign language teaching, i.e. the approaches to effective TEFL. Bearing in mind this theoretical context unfolded in chapter 2, section 3 aims to apply this theoretical background in order to evaluate the material in question. Questions that chapter 3 attempts to answer are for instance: What are the aims of TEFL? How is effective language learning perceived? How can the material based on a piece of literature be used in class? Does the material and its recommended classroom activities meet the different aims of TEFL? In what way does the material in combination with the tasks foster effective language learning? The fourth section will contain a critical discussion on the topic. It is supposed to connect the research question, the theoretical context and the analysis.

Seminar paper from the year 2009 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Literature, grade: 1,3, Ruhr-University of Bochum (Englisches Seminar), course: Teaching Literature, language: English, abstract: Few texts have been taught and dealt with more in school than William Golding's Lord of the Flies (1954). It has been part of the unofficial `school-canon' for more than three decades now and therefore it is useful to examine the suitability of this text for the EFL-classroom. This will be done by introducing the criteria for selecting texts given in Engelbert Thaler's Teaching English Literature, adding some elements from Ansgar Nünning's and Carola Surkamp's Englische Literatur Unterrichten. Grundlagen und Methoden and applying both to Lord of the Flies. First, a short summary of the plot will be given before the text will be analyzed with reference to its appropriateness for the EFL-classroom. This analysis will take place in four steps: First, the formal aspects will be taken into account, and then the thematic aspects will be discussed. Thirdly, the aspects related to reception will be illuminated. At the end a conclusion will be drawn whether or not for me Lord of the Flies is a suitable text for the EFL-classroom. In the course of the paper there will be given some hints as to how a certain aspect could be investigated further in the EFL-classroom. These hints are by no means a complete list and several aspects could be added to it. The decision which aspects should be included and which should be left out is up to the teacher who has to decide with regard to the amount of time he wants to spend on Lord of the Flies and with regard to the preconditions in his class

Alternative worlds have captivated readers since the beginning of humanity. Today, there is a large body of speculative fiction across a variety of media, including literary texts and films. The aim of the edited work at hand is twofold: provide an overview of selected speculative texts and illustrate the potential of well-known genres such as fantasy, science fiction, and dystopias for the English as a foreign language classroom. The international case studies showcase the attraction of these genres and comprise literary classics as well as more recent examples. Part I is organised into two major sections: primary and secondary level. Part II is devoted to university teaching. All contributions come with concrete suggestions for implementing the texts in foreign language learning settings, paying particular attention to the wide range of students in today's classrooms.
