Excerpt from Teaching Speech This book is for the beginning teacher. I have always had a special concern for the beginner, because I have been one SO many years of my life. I had little formal preparation for teaching: my adviser sim ply said, on a momentous occasion, Some day you may want to teach school, and worked out a program in which a psychology course counted as curriculum, a history course as philosophy, a litera ture course as method. Excerpt from Teaching Speech: Methods and Aims in the Study of Speech The authors wish to acknowledge their appreciation for the number of excellent suggestions which have come to them.from many teachers in the speech field. Although what should constitute the content of a book on speech methods is subject to much opinion, the authors have attempted to strike a balance in conforming to the wishes of those who seek to have more of general methods pre sented in this text and those who would require the authors to present in.more detail the means of teaching individual speech_ skills. Likewise, the authors have added to the explanation of the content of the speech art only such exposition as may better explain the method of teaching. Excerpt from Speech and the TeacherThese pages have been prepared in order that teachers and prospective teachers may draw strength from the contributions of speech. These pages do not presume to contain all that speech has to offer, but they do present enough of the bases of speech as related to teaching to point the way for the student. The purpose of the text is to aid the student who Wishes to be come an efficient classroom teacher. This text is designed for all prospective teachers. It is not a text designed to prepare teachers of speech. The effort is to prepare all teachers to use speech more effectively in all their classroom and extra-classroom work. Those students who will continue in their study of speech that they may become teachers of speech should find much to aid them in their future studies, but the emphasis is away from the training of Specialists. It is felt that there is too much that the classroom teacher needs to know about speech for teaching to spend time giving tech nical details which the future teacher of speech will learn in the more advanced courses. Further, it is felt that this type of detail would have little bearing upon the classroom teacher's ability to use the principles of speech presented. Therefore, detail and technical discussions beyond a necessary minimum have been avoided.Basically, this text endeavors to relate teaching principles with speech principles. Pedagogical references and applica tion have been held high throughout. Three major aspects have been developed: first, the speech of the teacher; second, the speech used by the teacher in teaching; and third, the speech used by the teacher for professional growth.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The Teacher Speaks The second aspect has to do with the personal preparation of the teacher. Some attention is given to the general problems of scholarship, and in these instances the part that effective speech can play is set forth. In developing this aspect of the text a great deal of emphasis is placed upon the speech needs of the teacher. To help the student become competent in this area, the discussion is supplemented by exercises and suggested ways of self-evaluation and evaluation by colleagues. It is hoped that such practice will firmly establish the habit of critical self-analysis as a means to continued improvement. The third aspect deals with the problems of interpersonal communications in out-of-class situations as they affect the teacher's professional success. Emphasis is placed upon the employment interview and other types of personal conference, including the counseling conference. Certainly the skills in volved in sharing ideas in face-to-face situations play a large part in the teacher's total effectiveness. Contacts with parents, community leaders, and school personnel represent occasions in which the teacher's speech personality is a major factor in his success. The fourth aspect is perhaps the key to teaching success: the continued growth and improvement of communicational ability. Though other factors are necessarily involved, the level of communication is an index of the level of learning. All teachers are concerned with the quality of the student's speech. They must be able to recognize difficulties, deviations, and maladjustments related to speech abilities. This aspect leans for its technical detail upon the earlier discussion of the prin ciples underlying the quality of the teacher's speech, but the principles are directly applied to the student in this phase of the discussion. Further, in order that the classroom itself can be actively a learning laboratory, many suggestions are made for the use of speech and for possible speaking assignments in functional speaking situations. Excerpt from Speech Education Speech training is every year taking a more significant place in our educational life. This is due to the fact that speech, as a field of study, is one that is definitely associated with all other educational experiences, with human needs, and with human efficiency. In it, as in few other subjects, the individual is the main concern. In it the subject matter deals with human equip ment and the individual's use and control of that equipment for personal and social ends, with language as a social institution and the individual's use of language and interest in its history, with the human m1nd and its ways and power of expression and, ultimately, with the art of oral communication as an essential in personal and social competence. Educators today, therefore, have a deeper understanding of the fact that the right sort of speech training frees the individual, develops him mentally, socially, and culturally and leads constructively to individual and social ideals. Speech education provides experiences in learning in which the student may have a deep and active concern and through it strong individual motives for oral communication. It prescribes projects and activities of social value in which the student may become a participant and thereby develop right social attitudes and social understanding. It brings a student to his feet, develops his individuality, his self-control, his self-respect, gives him a better chance to succeed in life and increases his power to serve.
