Explore tea cultures around the world with vibrant images and sweetly simple text. This poetic picture book takes children of all ages on an adventure around the world to discover new cultures and friends through tea. Did you know that po cha, the traditional tea in Tibet, is thick and salty like soup? Or that in Iran, tea is served with a rock? (A rock candy, that is!) Or that afternoon tea was dreamed up in England by a duchess who complained of being hungry between lunch and dinner? Teatime Around the World welcomes the youngest of readers with simple, vivid poetry complemented by unique facts about different tea cultures. Vibrant, detailed pictures by Chelsea O'Byrne bring to life debut author Denyse Waissbluth's joyous celebration of diversity and deliciousness.

In Teatimes, I recorded my daily ritual of pouring a cup of tea and writing in my journal. From a case that replicates a Salada tea box, the reader selects and unfolds an empty tea bag and discovers a fragment of a journal entry. Where once there were tea leaves, now there are reflections written in sepia ink. There is a distinct contrast between the bag’ exteriors, with their bright red commercial labels and declarative statements, and the unwrapped interiors, with handwritten personal musings. Private thoughts are steeping.

England’s premier food maven shares recipes for cakes and dainties designed to make teatime sparkle. Only the most hardened dieter can resist the pleasures of afternoon tea. Its enjoyment, whether it is a simple slice of home-baked cake or dainty sandwiches followed by scones oozing with jam and cream, is part of our culture and is a tradition acted out each and every day in tea-rooms up and down the country. This then is the perfect book for all tea-time lovers, with over 100 recipes chosen by the un-crowned queen of British cookery, Marguerite Patten, and is published as a tribute to and celebration of Marguerite’s 90th year. There are recipes for cakes, breads, biscuits, sandwiches, and savories from England, Scotland, Wales, and Ireland as well as recipes from teatimes around the world. But teatime isn’t teatime without a pot of tea, so the book also traces the history of Britain’s national beverage with a guide to all the different blends and styles available.
