Personalized Predictive Modeling in Diabetes features state-of-the-art methodologies and algorithmic approaches which have been applied to predictive modeling of glucose concentration, ranging from simple autoregressive models of the CGM time series to multivariate nonlinear regression techniques of machine learning. Developments in the field have been analyzed with respect to: (i) feature set (univariate or multivariate), (ii) regression technique (linear or non-linear), (iii) learning mechanism (batch or sequential), (iv) development and testing procedure and (v) scaling properties. In addition, simulation models of meal-derived glucose absorption and insulin dynamics and kinetics are covered, as an integral part of glucose predictive models. This book will help engineers and clinicians to: select a regression technique which can capture both linear and non-linear dynamics in glucose metabolism in diabetes, and which exhibits good generalization performance under stationary and non-stationary conditions; ensure the scalability of the optimization algorithm (learning mechanism) with respect to the size of the dataset, provided that multiple days of patient monitoring are needed to obtain a reliable predictive model; select a features set which efficiently represents both spatial and temporal dependencies between the input variables and the glucose concentration; select simulation models of subcutaneous insulin absorption and meal absorption; identify an appropriate validation procedure, and identify realistic performance measures. Describes fundamentals of modeling techniques as applied to glucose control Covers model selection process and model validation Offers computer code on a companion website to show implementation of models and algorithms Features the latest developments in the field of diabetes predictive modeling

The emergence of type 2 diabetes as a global pandemic is one of the major challenges to health care in the 21st century. This book contains chapters covering the newest scientific concepts in the pathogenesis of type 2 diabetes, and the complications and approaches in diagnosis and glycemic control. Part of the book is dedicated to the effect of diabetes on the mental functions and treatment strategies to prevent cognitive decline. Glucose monitoring, using cutting-edge technologies, is outlined, as well as the role of health information technologies in diabetes management. Updates on glucose lowering therapy are presented, and the new emerging class of SGLT2 inhibitors is discussed in detail. The purpose of this book is to disseminate knowledge on type 2 diabetes and to contribute to the professional development of physicians, internists, endocrinologists, medical students, and research scientists in diabetes.

Oral Delivery Of Insulin written by T.A. Sonia and has been published by Elsevier this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2014-12-11 with Medical categories.

Diabetes Mellitus, a syndrome of disordered metabolism, characterised by abnormal elevation in blood glucose level, has become a life-threatening condition for many people. Current means of therapy for Diabetes Mellitus do not mimic the normal physiological pattern of insulin release. Oral delivery is the preferred route of administration due to its non-invasive nature. Oral delivery of insulin presents an overview of Diabetes Mellitus, and discusses the strategies and techniques adopted for oral delivery of insulin. This title begins with an introductory chapter on symptoms, complications and therapy for Diabetes Mellitus. Subsequent chapters cover the various routes for administering insulin; the challenges and strategies of oral delivery; experimental techniques in the development of an oral insulin carrier; lipids; inorganic nanoparticles and polymers in oral insulin delivery; and a summary and presentation of future perspectives on oral delivery of insulin. Presents an overview of Diabetes Mellitus Includes a discussion of various strategies and techniques adopted for oral delivery of insulin Presents an update of research in the field

The Discovery Of Insulin written by Michael Bliss and has been published by University of Toronto Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2017-06-22 with Medical categories.

The discovery of insulin at the University of Toronto in 1921-22 was one of the most dramatic events in the history of the treatment of disease. Insulin was a wonder-drug with ability to bring patients back from the very brink of death, and it was no surprise that in 1923 the Nobel Prize for Medicine was awarded to its discoverers, the Canadian research team of Banting, Best, Collip, and Macleod. In this engaging and award-winning account, historian Michael Bliss recounts the fascinating story behind the discovery of insulin – a story as much filled with fiery confrontation and intense competition as medical dedication and scientific genius. Originally published in 1982 and updated in 1996, The Discovery of Insulin has won the City of Toronto Book Award, the Jason Hannah Medal of the Royal Society of Canada, and the William H. Welch Medal of the American Association for the History of Medicine.

Type 1 Diabetes written by Zachary Pearce and has been published by Nova Science Publishers this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2014 with Diabetes categories.

Type 1 diabetes is a chronic auto-immune disease. Type 1 diabetes was previously called insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (IDDM) or juvenile-onset diabetes. Type 1 diabetes develops when the body's immune system destroys pancreatic beta cells, the only cells in the body that make the hormone insulin that regulates blood glucose. To survive, people with type 1 diabetes must have insulin delivered by injection or a pump. Topics discussed in this compilation include genetic and epigenetic studies of type 1 diabetes; blood pressure and diabetes during pregnancy; comparison of diseases-specific quality of life, metabolic control and cardiorespiratory fitness in physically active and inactive youths with type 1 diabetes; stem cells for the treatment of patients with type 1 diabetes; and the causes and potential complications of type 1 diabetes.
