This volume contains all of the known musical sources and sketches for Stravinsky¿s Pulcinella (1919-1920) representing over 250 facsimile pages from the combined holdings of the Paul Sacher Stiftung (Basel) and the British Library (London) with invited essays by Lynn Garafola, , Ulrich Mosch, Jeanne Chenault Porter and Richard Taruskin. This publication was enhanced by the research of the late Barry Brook and by an appendix of song texts in the Neapolitan dialect by Dale Monson.Numerous tables in this publication provide efficient access to the entries on each page of the facsimile: according to the source groups, sketches, sources and sketches in order of the sources and sources and sketches in order of the published edition. In her commentary Maureen Carr discusses: the genesis of the idea for Pulcinella, the sources chosen by Stravinsky and those that he discarded, the sketches, as well as analytical perspectives on Stravinsky¿s compositional process for this work. In addition to the musical sources and sketches, other documents in this volume, such as a preliminary outline of the work in the hand of the painter, Pablo Picasso (Musée Picasso) and a more detailed scenario written out by the choreographer, Leonide Massine (Basel), will help scholars to understand the nature of the collaboration among these luminaries [the composer Igor Stravinsky (1882-1971), the Spanish painter Pablo Picasso (1881¿1973), the Russian choreographer Léonide Massine (Miasin; 1895¿1979), and the Russian impresario Sergei Diaghilev (1872¿1929)] that resulted in this astonishing dramatic work for dance and song. While Kierkegaard is primarily known as a philosopher or religious thinker, his writings have also been used extensively by literary writers, critics and artists. This use can be traced in the work of major cultural figures not just in Denmark and Scandinavia but also in the wider world. They have been attracted to his creative mixing of genres, his complex use of pseudonyms, his rhetoric and literary style, and his rich images, parables and allegories. The present volume documents this influence in the different language groups and traditions. Tome III investigates the works of Swedish and Norwegian writers and artists inspired by Kierkegaard. In Sweden the novelist Victoria Benedictsson made use of Kierkegaard during the period of the so-called Modern Breakthrough, as did the playwright August Strindberg. Later Swedish writers have continued to draw on his thought, such as Selma Lagerlof, Lars Ahlin, Lars Gyllensten, and Carl-Henning Wijkmark. The Norwegian reception of Kierkegaard also began remarkably early and was shaped by the leading names in Norwegian cultural life. Despite his coy responses to questions about his relation to Kierkegaard, Henrik Ibsen clearly seems to have been inspired by the Dane in works such as Brand. Norwegian writer and poet Bjornstjerne Bjornson, who was influenced by the Modern Breakthrough movement, was also deeply inspired by Kierkegaard. Finally, the celebrated Norwegian artist Edvard Munch (1863-1944) closely studied key Kierkegaardian concepts such as anxiety, and his influence is notable in his iconic paintings such as The Scream.

Venetian music print culture of the mid-sixteenth century is presented here through a study of the Scotto press, one of the foremost dynastic music publishers of the Renaissance. For over a century, the house of Scotto played a pivotal role in the international book trade, publishing in a variety of fields including philosophy, medicine, religion, and music. This book examines the mercantile activities of the firm through both a historical study, which illuminates the wide world of the Venetian music printing industry, and a catalog, which details the music editions brought out by the firm during its most productive period. A valuable reference work, this book not only enhances our understanding of the socioeconomic and cultural history of Renaissance Venice, it also helps to preserve our knowledge of a vast musical repertory.
