The project “Developing Organizational Capacity for Ecosystem Stewardship and Livelihoods in Caribbean Small-Scale Fisheries” (StewardFish) aimed to support the implementation of the Caribbean and North Brazil Shelf Large Marine Ecosystems initiatives in seven countries of the Caribbean (Antigua and Barbuda, Barbados, Belize, Guyana, Jamaica, Saint Lucia, St. Vincent and the Grenadines) and implemented by five Caribbean regional entities. It aimed to empower fisherfolk throughout the fisheries value chains to engage in resource management, decision-making processes and sustainable livelihoods, with strengthened institutional support at all levels. The findings and conclusions of the terminal evaluations highlight the effectiveness of the project's capacity building activities, the platform for inter-agency collaboration, and the strengthening of legal and policy frameworks. Given the short time frame of the projects, as well as the interruptions due to the COVID-19, a number of recommendations are made in order to sustain the results achieved thus far, but which still require investment.

McConney and has been published by Food & Agriculture Org. this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2021-03-11 with Technology & Engineering categories.

There is increasing awareness of the need for, and a growing movement to apply, the ecosystem approach to fisheries (EAF) and develop sustainable linkages between climate change adaptation (CCA) and disaster risk management (DRM). Fisheries learning exchanges (FLEs) can be useful for enhancing fisheries management that is guided by these concepts. In the Caribbean there exists little guidance on FLEs that focus on the concepts of EAF, CCA and DRM. Although best practices exist, guidance for designing and implementing suitable exchange programmes is almost non-existent. This report seeks to fill this gap by providing practical guidance. First, concepts are presented to underpin good FLE practices. Two case studies from the Caribbean are offered as examples of recent FLEs, with lessons learnt from the experiences. Next, guidelines for organising FLEs are outlined, followed by potential challenges and solutions to be considered. Finally, useful resources for additional practical guidance are set out with links for easy access.

"Climate-smart agriculture, forestry and fisheries (CSA), contributes to the achievement of sustainable development goals. It integrates the three dimensions of sustainable development (economic, social and environmental) by jointly addressing food security and climate challenges. It is composed of three main pillars: sustainably increasing agricultural productivity and incomes; adapting and building resilience to climate change; reducing and/or removing greenhouse gases emissions, where possible. The purpose of the sourcebook is to further elaborate the concept of CSA and demonstrate its potential, as well as limitations. It aims to help decision makers at a number of levels (including political administrators and natural resource managers) to understand the different options that are available for planning, policies and investments and the practices that are suitable for making different agricultural sectors, landscapes and food systems more climate-smart. This sourcebook is a reference tool for planners, practitioners and policy makers working in agriculture, forestry and fisheries at national and subnational levels." -- Back cover.

This IPCC Special Report on the Ocean and Cryosphere in a Changing Climate is the most comprehensive and up-to-date assessment of the observed and projected changes to the ocean and cryosphere and their associated impacts and risks, with a focus on resilience, risk management response options, and adaptation measures, considering both their potential and limitations. It brings together knowledge on physical and biogeochemical changes, the interplay with ecosystem changes, and the implications for human communities. It serves policymakers, decision makers, stakeholders, and all interested parties with unbiased, up-to-date, policy-relevant information. This book develops an adaptive approach to environmental impact assessment and management and is based on a study initiated by a workshop convened in early 1974 by SCOPE (Scientific Committee on Problems of the Environment). CS Holling discusses the nature and behavior of ecological systems and its issues, limitations, and potential of environmental assessment. Further, he discusses how we can incorporate impact assessment studies with actual environmental planning and decision making.Crawford Holling received his B.A. and M.Sc. at the University of Toronto (1952) and his Ph.D. at the University of British Columbia (1957). He worked in the laboratories of the Department of the Environment, Government of Canada. Since then, he has been, at various times, Professor and Director of the Institute of Resource Ecology, University of British Columbia, Vancouver, Canada, and Director of the International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis (IIASA), Vienna, Austria. He now occupies the Arthur R. Marshall Jr. Chair in Ecological Sciences at the University of Florida and has launched a comparative study of the structure and dynamics of ecosystems.

The project’s objective was “to build resilience and reduce the vulnerability to climate change of the marine fisheries and mariculture sectors in the Benguela Current Large Marine Ecosystem (BCLME) through implementation of adaptation strategies”. The recommendations are around: involvement of FAO Country Offices in regional projects to facilitate transfer of activities; funding prioritization after no-cost extensions; institutionalization of the project; and management of joint project budgets. The key lessons learned were on challenges of implementing joint projects in countries with different political economies, importance of national working groups in the coordination of national climate change activities, need to train country coordinators in project and budget management, monitoring and evaluation, communications, and the importance of embedding project into focal ministries/departments for sustainable transitions.
