Obwohl die Bezüge auf die Architektur in der Literatur vielfältig sind, werden sie erst seit kurzem systematisch betrachtet. Germanistische, romanistische und anglistische Literatur- und Kulturwissenschaftler sowie Kunsthistoriker haben bei einer Freiburger Tagung neue Perspektiven erprobt und Fallstudien präsentiert, aus denen die Beiträge des vorliegenden Bandes hervorgingen. Sie konzentrieren sich auf Texte und Kontexte des 19. und 20. Jahrhunderts, die Zeit, in der eine enorme Präsenz der Architektur in der Literatur und komplexe ästhetische Interdependenzen zwischen beiden Künsten festzustellen sind – nicht zuletzt weil die Stilfrage im Zuge des architektonischen Historismus und seiner Überwindung neue Bedeutung erhielt und der Raum sich als eine zentrale Kategorie in der ästhetischen Theorie etablierte. Untersucht wird, wie in der europäischen Literatur der Moderne Architekturen thematisiert und repräsentiert werden, welche Funktion ihrer Beschreibung und Imagination für den jeweiligen Text, für seine Form, Struktur und Ästhetik sowie für den Prozess der Narration zukommt.

This open access book promotes the idea that all media types are multimodal and that comparing media types, through an intermedial lens, necessarily involves analysing these multimodal traits.
