After many years of being an also-ran in the National league, the Pittsburgh Pirates' fortunes changed dramatically following the 1899 season after a monumental deal with the Louisville Colonels. The addition of star players such as Fred Clarke, Honus Wagner, Tommy Leach and Deacon Phillippe allowed Pittsburgh to become the first baseball dynasty of the twentieth century as they won National League pennants in 1901, 1902 and 1903. Without question, the 1902 Pirates aggregation was the greatest of those three squads. This definitive historical account examines the record-breaking 1902 Pittsburgh season, the politics that shaped baseball's landscape during that era and the players responsible for that squad's claiming its rightful place in baseball history.

Pittsburgh is synonymous with winning. From the Penguins and Steelers to the Pirates and Panthers, the Steel City knows championships. There must be something special in the water to make Pittsburgh so particularly gifted with its sports teams. The most famous teams in the city's history would most likely be the 1970s Steelers, known as the Steel Curtain for obvious reasons, and the Penguins who raised the Stanley Cup five times. Names such as Lemieux, Crosby, Roethlisberger, Bradshaw, Clemente and Stargell are legends of American sport and members of Pittsburgh's most cherished franchises, but for every sports legend and multi-million dollar franchise, there are a dozen more talented players and long-past teams that have been forgotten to history; the Negro League's Crawford and Homestead Grays are too often overlooked in the city's sports history but were as talented as any team that has played there. Author Dave Finoli ranks the fifty greatest teams that won trophies, brought glory and lifted the hearts of Pittsburgh's devoted sports fans.

The rivalry between the Chicago Cubs and the New York Giants--the National League's greatest teams in its early days--took hold with the founding of the league in 1876. Between the two bitter rivals there were nine first-second finishes, eight second-third finishes, and 30 out of a possible 65 championships in the league's first six decades. Their games often showcased match-ups between baseball's most talented and toughest players and often had playoff implications. This history of the rivalry begins coverage in 1876 (when the Cubs won the first NL championship) and goes through 1932 (when John McGraw stepped down as manager of the Giants). All of the many great personalities, player match-ups, streaks, and pennant races are included.

A young German immigrant, Barney Dreyfuss was an American success story in business and in baseball. He fell in love with the game after settling in Paducah, Kentucky, where he discovered he had a knack for assembling good players on the diamond. Relocating to Louisville, he became involved in the professional game with the Colonels. Faced with ouster from the National League, he took his players to Pittsburgh, where he became owner of the Pirates and forged a winning tradition, leading the club to six pennants and two World Series. This first biography of Dreyfuss chronicles the innovative career of the Hall of Famer executive who built Forbes Field--the National League's first concrete-and-steel ballpark, into which he put $1 million of his own money--pushed for creation of the office of commissioner to govern the game and helped initiate the modern World Series.

Among the great pitchers in baseball history, Charles “Deacon” Phillippe and Samuel “The Schoolmaster” Leever are hardly household names. But during the first decade of the twentieth century, these two Pittsburgh Pirates were among the most celebrated pitchers in the majors. From 1900 through 1906, they posted a combined record of 261 victories against 131 losses for a win-loss percentage of .666. During the years Deacon and the Schoolmaster pitched together, the Pirates never finished out of the first division, won four National League pennants, and came in second four times. Without flamboyance or controversy to color their legacy, their fame faded quickly after their playing days. But they remain among the most important players in the history of the club.

Following the 1919 Black Sox scandal, baseball needed men willing and able to pump life back into the game during tough times. Numerous ballplayers stepped forward and left their mark on the national pastime as it continued to thrive and grow during a decade that became known as the Roaring Twenties, a raucous, happy time period when a free-spirited nature prevailed. In Baseball’s Roaring Twenties: A Decade of Legends, Characters, and Diamond Adventures, Ronald T. Waldo recounts the rollicking escapades surrounding a distinctive collection of players, managers, and umpires that truly personified this era of baseball history. Waldo includes a mix of unique stories and amusing tales surrounding baseball greats like Babe Ruth, Connie Mack, Rabbit Maranville, and Casey Stengel, alongside less famous diamond performers such as Duster Mails, Jay Kirke, Jimmy O’Connell, and Possum Whitted. The fans—who were every bit as important in helping the game grow during the ‘20s—are also given their due with a chapter of their own. From the story of Heinie Mueller unceremoniously pushing his attractive cousin out of sight when he saw manager Branch Rickey approaching to the tale of minor league hurler Augie Prudhomme literally following the sarcastic directive from pilot George Stallings to burn his uniform, Baseball’s Roaring Twenties provides an entertaining perspective of baseball during this singular decade. Amusing and informative, this book will be of interest to baseball fans and historians of all generations.

Since the dawn of baseball disputes between players and management have always existed. A glorious period of diamond success and pennant glory occurred when Barney Dreyfuss owned the Pittsburgh Pirates from 1900 through 1932. During that time, the Pirates claimed six National League flags, appeared in four World Series, and won championship titles twice-in 1909 and 1925. After gaining full control of Pittsburgh's baseball organization in 1901, Dreyfuss acted as the supreme authority regarding all the club's affairs. Many talented players pulled on a Pirates uniform throughout the Barney Dreyfuss ownership period. Some of these all-star diamond performers fell out of favor with management through two baseball eras and soon found themselves packing their bags and moving on to another city. The list of stalwart players shown the door when Dreyfuss ruled his diamond empire included Rube Waddell, Jesse Tannehill, Jack Chesbro, Vic Willis, Al Mamaux, Rabbit Maranville, Babe Adams, Max Carey, Kiki Cuyler, Glenn Wright, and Dick Bartell. An ugly group of gamblers, stationing themselves at Exposition Park and Forbes Field, subjected certain players to their vile comments and disgusting verbal abuse. The actions of these unsavory individuals had a hand in the organization ridding itself of Kitty Bransfield, Claude Ritchey, and Bill Abstein because the constant taunting and heckling affected their performance. From Waddell to Bartell, Ronald T. Waldo shares why many of the greatest players in Pittsburgh Pirates history were traded or released during Barney Dreyfuss's tenure owning the team.

This book brings to life the many odd, eccentric, and bizarre characters of baseball from the 1800s through the Deadball Era. While many stories are about the game’s greats such as John McGraw, Frank Chance, and Rube Waddell, the exploits of little-known players like J.A. Brown, Sleepy Bill Burns, and Jack Hendricks are covered as well.
