An instant Wall Street Journal Bestseller Now in paperback—the definitive guide to communicating and connecting in a hybrid world. Email replies that show up a week later. Video chats full of “oops sorry no you go” and “can you hear me?!” Ambiguous text-messages. Weird punctuation you can’t make heads or tails of. Is it any wonder that communication takes us so much time and effort to figure out? How did we lose our innate capacity to understand each other? Humans rely on body language to connect and build trust, but with most of our communication happening from behind a screen, traditional body language signals are no longer visible—or are they? In Digital Body Language, Erica Dhawan, a go-to thought leader on collaboration and a passionate communication junkie, combines cutting edge research with engaging storytelling to decode the new signals and cues that have replaced traditional body language across genders, generations, and culture. In real life, we lean in, uncross our arms, smile, nod and make eye contact to show we listen and care. Online, reading carefully is the new listening. Writing clearly is the new empathy. And a phone or video call is worth a thousand emails. Digital Body Language will turn your daily misunderstandings into a set of collectively understood laws that foster connection, no matter the distance. Dhawan investigates a wide array of exchanges—from large conferences and video meetings to daily emails, texts, IMs, and conference calls—and offers insights and solutions to build trust and clarity with anyone in our ever-changing world.

It's not enough to have great ideas. You also need to know how to communicate them. What makes someone charismatic? Why do some people captivate a room, while others have trouble managing a small meeting? What makes some ideas spread, while other good ones fall by the wayside? Cues - the tiny signals we send to others 24/7 through our body language, facial expressions, word choices and vocal inflection - have a massive impact on how we, and our ideas, come across. Our cues can either enhance our message or undermine it. In this entertaining and accessible guide to the hidden language of cues, Vanessa Van Edwards teaches you how to convey power, trust, leadership, likability and charisma in every interaction. You'll learn: - Which vocal cues make you sound more confident - Which body language cues assert, 'I'm a leader, and here's why you should join me' - Which verbal cues to use in pitches, branding and emails to increase trust (and generate excitement about interacting with you) - Which visual cues you are sending in your profile pictures, clothing and professional brand Whether you're pitching an investment, negotiating a job offer or having a tough conversation with a colleague, Cues can help you improve your relationships, express empathy and create meaningful connections with lasting impact. Praise for the First Edition: "This book is so well written! I cannot say enough positive things about the material I have read. ...This is excellent material and should be a 'stock' book in the library of every nurse!"--Helen Gordon, DNP, MS, CNM, Assistant Professor, Duke School of Nursing One of the most hotly discussed and debated areas of society today, health care law carries a host of legal and ethical complexities that nurses and providers must increasingly recognize and factor into their best decision making. This convenient and comprehensive reference, written by expert nurse attorneys, untangles the legal dilemmas often encountered in contemporary nursing practice, such as nursing malpractice/negligence and liability, risk management, corporate compliance, employment law, business law, and dispute resolution as they relate to health care law and nursing practice. Written with the same no-nonsense, understandable language of the first edition, this revision continues to break down the often complex legalese of health care law and now includes two completely new chapters on the evolving roles of advanced practice nurses and managing disasters and public health emergencies. Multiple case studies and legal analyses walk the reader through the varied scenarios nurse leaders will confront with staff and patient-related legal issues they will encounter on a regular basis. New to the Second Edition: Revised to reflect multiple changes in health care law and updated information to the nursing/legal arena A new chapter, "Advanced Practice Nursing," covers increasing responsibilities in primary care, dynamics of health care reform, and changing nursing roles A New chapter, "Disasters and Public Health Emergencies," discusses major laws governing these events and hospital emergency operations plans Key Features: Serves as a comprehensive text for undergraduate and graduate programs Includes Objectives, Conclusions and Trends, and Key Points in each chapter Presents real-life cases and interactive features to reinforce learning Addresses business topics and corporate law, not typically covered in similar texts Covers nursing malpractice, risk management, employment law, business law, corporate compliance, and dispute resolution

In this study, the analysis of the Parthenon frieze is based on the assumption that the pictorial narrative scenes of the Classical period were conceived with the intention of exemplifying comprehensive patterns of action which were related to ethical values and social status. In this way, it can be shown that - on the west, north, and south side of the frieze - the pictorial narration in several "chapters" demonstrates how the young male Athenians become qualified members of the citizenry, through a multi-stage process of civic education carried out by the democratic polis. The stages of female socialization are visualized on the east side, the goal being the status and responsibilities of a married woman who raises and educates her offspring in an Athenian oikos, as represented in the central scene of the east frieze. The messages of the other Parthenon sculptures, as well as of the colossal statue of Athena in the center of this sacred building, are closely related to this frame of reference. One could claim that the pictorial narrative of the Parthenon frieze is the first comprehensive discourse on democracy. (Series: Hephaistos.
