When San Zang and his disciples come to an impassable river, they take shelter in a small village, which has been ruthlessly tormented by the Ling Gan Demon, a vicious underwater creature who demands sacrifices of the most horrifying nature. The Ling Gan Demon first appeared in the village during the great drought decades earlier and brought much needed rain to the village. Afterwards, the village began to worship the demon, thinking it was a Taoist deity. The following spring, the demon brought so much rain it caused a flood that inundated the village. The villagers fled to the peak of a mountain, where the demon appeared and told them their village would only survive if they made a horrific annual offering to him: the sacrifice of one of the village's young children. At first the villagers refused, but the demon brutally killed anyone who betrayed him, so they were left with no choice. Sun Wu Kong and Zhu Bajie fight the Ling Gan Demon and his minions, driving him from the shrine and deep into the cold black recesses of the river. Then the Demon hatches a plan to cause a tremendous snowstorm that will paralyze the village and freeze the river. When the strom arrives, San Zang decides to cross the river by walking across the frozen surface. Halfway across, the ice collapses, and San Zang is captured by Ling Gan. Now, it will take the concentrated efforts of Wu Kong, Bajie, Wujing, and their allies to save their kidnapped master, liberate the village, free the lost souls, and continue the journey to the West.

San Zang and his disciples enter a land consumed by an ominous fog and encounter an innkeeper who tells them of a mysterious threat in the mountains. Once, the inn prospered on the business of traveling merchants and the land was not covered in fog. Then one evening a tremendous wind blew, after which the fog rolled in and never went away. Several merchants who had spent the evening at the inn set out westward to conduct business and were never seen or heard from again. Several days later, the innkeeper was doing chores when one of the businessmen stumbled out of the fog. Covered in a mysterious weblike sunstance and moments away from death, the merchant was only able to mutter something about a spider before he died in the innkeeper's arms. There are seven monstrous faries, both beautiful and savage, who will ensnare San Zang in a dangrous web of deceit. Now, Wu Kong, Bajie, and Wujing will have to keep their wits about them to distinguish fact from fiction and reality from illusion; their master's life depends on it.

San Zang presents the sutras to Emperor Taizong, after which the priest and his disciples ascend to Heaven. There, San Zang and Wu Kong are granted the rank of Buddha, while Bajie is appointed Guardian of the Altar, Wujing is promoted to the rank of Golden Arhat, and Yu Long is appointed to the Order of Heavenly Dragons.

A horrible premonition haunts San Zang as he and his disciples enter a land ruled by three brothers. San Zang kneels at the foot of three open graves. Weeping uncontrollably, the priest ponders existence and the fleeting nature of the relationships formed over a lifetime. The priest does so, outrunning countless monsters and crossing miles and miles of hostile terrain. As he slowly makes his way across an endless desert, he is swallowed by a pool of quicksand. As he sinks to his death, he cries out for Wu Kong to save him. San Zang startles awake from his nightmare, calling out Wu Kong's name. His disciples, still alive and by his side, have set up camp and were listening to the priest talk in his sleep. They tell him that the sleep-talk was gibberish and ask him to explain the dream, but San Zang refuses and goes bcak to sleep. Can Wu Kong, Bajie, and Wujing heed the warning of their master's dream? Or will this band of brothers unravel when the fate of the journey hangs in the balance?

As autumn draws to a close, San Zang have traveled well past the dangerous Mount Flame when they come upon an enormous city. It is the capital of the JiSai Kingdom, and at its center is an enormous Buddhist temple. When the traveling companions arrive in the city, they look for food and lodging. Bajie volunteers to go looking for food, but when he asks a local vendor for charity in the name of Buddha, he is angrily rebuked and then physically attacked. Wu Kong intervenes and subdues the vendors, and the four friends continue to walk the streets of the city. Soon, they come upon a group of shackled monks begging for food. The monks explain to them that the JiSai Kingdom was once blessed with good fortune emanating from a magical treasure that rested at the top of the golden temple. One day, the treasure was stolen, and as the kingdom's fortunes declined, the king's angry subjects accused the priests of the theft. The king severely punished the innocent monks and allowed the golden temple to fall into disrepair. The reak culprit was never discovered. Now, San Zang must convince the king to forgive those who have been falsely accused of theft, while Sun Wu Kong and his friends search deep under the sea for the stolen treasure that will restore the kingdom's fortunes.
