In this fascinating and inventive work, A. David Napier argues that the central assumption of immunology—that we survive through the recognition and elimination of non-self—has become a defining concept of the modern age. Tracing this immunological understanding of self and other through an incredibly diverse array of venues, from medical research to legal and military strategies and the electronic revolution, Napier shows how this defensive way of looking at the world not only destroys diversity but also eliminates the possibility of truly engaging difference, thereby impoverishing our culture and foreclosing tremendous opportunities for personal growth. To illustrate these destructive consequences, Napier likens the current craze for embracing diversity and the use of politically correct speech to a cultural potluck to which we each bring different dishes, but at which no one can eat unless they abide by the same rules. Similarly, loaning money to developing nations serves as a tool both to make the peoples in those nations more like us and to maintain them in the nonthreatening status of distant dependents. To break free of the resulting downward spiral of homogenization and self-focus, Napier suggests that we instead adopt a new defining concept based on embryology, in which development and self-growth take place through a process of incorporation and transformation. In this effort he suggests that we have much to learn from non-Western peoples, such as the Balinese, whose ritual practices require them to take on the considerable risk of injecting into their selves the potential dangers of otherness—and in so doing ultimately strengthen themselves as well as their society. The Age of Immunology, with its combination of philosophy, history, and cultural inquiry, will be seen as a manifesto for a new age and a new way of thinking about the world and our place in it.

In the classic sense, immunity is the ability of an organism to resist disease. On the one hand, we must distinguish between age and disease; on the other hand, the interaction between them is of considerable theoretical and practical interest. To the gerontologic research community, therefore, immunity also becomes the ability of an organism to resist age. Were the immune and other protective systems of the body able to maintain themselves over the course of time, and if there were no degradation related to age, the everyday loss of energy and vitality that occurs in the lives of older people as a consequence of viruses, arthritis, and other debilitating circumstances would be greatly lessened. The objective of gerontologists is not just to extend the life span but rather to improve the vigor, health, and quality oflife. To date, we have not developed a single index to measure immunity that is of use clinically in the evaluation of older people and of their immunologic compe tence. It may not be surprising that just such a clinical index may be available in the not-too-distant future. We can also look forward to the assembling of a greater body of information explaining how and why the immune system fails with age while, paradoxically, the incidence of autoimmune diseases increases with age. It is this latter phenomenon that may playa part in a wide range of chronic diseases from rheumatoid arthritis to senile dementia.

Dr. William E. Paul (1936–2015) was the leader of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) immunology community and his career is without parallel in the field of immunology. He was the Chief of the Laboratory of Immunology, National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), from 1970 at the age of 34 until his death. His groundbreaking contributions to the field of immunology, including the discovery of interleukin (IL)-4, led to more than 600 publications over half a century. He also played an important role in the establishment of the NIH Vaccine Research Center while he was the Director of the NIH Office of AIDS Research. Furthermore, Dr. Paul was a shining icon and an international giant of contemporary immunology. He was a genius and a living encyclopedia of immunology: the author of the textbook "Fundamental Immunology" since its inception to the 7th edition in 2013; and the editor of the “Annual Review of Immunology” from its inaugural issue in 1983 until 2011. In his last book "Immunity", he discussed the three laws of immunology: universality, tolerance and appropriateness. These capture the essence of Dr. Paul as well as the field. Dr. Paul had an enormous impact on the research career of his trainees, many of whom became leaders in the field of immunology, including Drs. Charles Janeway, Ronald Schwartz, Laurie Glimcher and Mark Davis. Dr. Paul was an intelligent, generous, humble but optimistic man. He was also an inspirational and thoughtful leader, colleague and friend; he inspired and encouraged people around him in every possible way. As his trainees and/or colleagues, we miss him greatly and dedicate this special Research Topic to his memory. We thank all the authors who participated in this collection as well as other colleagues and friends of Dr. Paul's who have supported us in a series of events after Dr. Paul's passing. Discrimination of self from nonself is the major function of the immune system and understanding the mechanism(s) involved a main employer of immunologists. Hence, the age-old puzzle of why a fetus that contains a panel of major histocompatibility (MHC) antigens derived from its mother and its father is not rejected (spontaneously aborted) by lymphocytes from its mother who should theoretically recognize foreign MHC molecules from the father has remained of great interest. This dilemma has enticed immunologists and developmental biologists for many years. This volume was created to present the information currently on hand in this subject to the scientific public. The guest editor, Professor Lars Olding, has a long and distinguished history of contributions in this field, having been one of the main propo nents of the argument that lymphocytes from the fetus play an active role in this process by suppressing lymphocytes from the mother from proliferating and thereby acting as killer cells. His work has defined the phenomenon and identified suppressor molecules (factors) involved in the process. In a different but related chapter, Margareta Unander extends such observations to the clinical study of women with repeated "habitual" mIS carriages.
