This volume explores the policy dynamics, economic commitments and social impacts of the fast evolving Sino-LAC relations. China’s engagement with Latin America and the Caribbean has entered into an era of strategic transition. While China is committed to strengthening its economic and political ties with Latin America and the Caribbean, Latin America as a bloc is enthusiastically echoing China’s endeavor by diverting their focus toward the other side of the ocean. The transitional aspect of China-LAC ties is phenomenal, and is manifested not only in the accelerating momentum of trade, investment, and loan but also in the China-CELAC Forum mechanism that maps out an institutional framework for decades beyond. While Latin America is redefined as an emerging priority to the leadership in Beijing, what are the responses from Latin America and the United States? In this sense, experts from four continents provide local answers to this global question.

"Much hand-wringing has occurred over the so-called failure of young people to grow up today. This volume persuasively shows the range of forces that shape the protracted transition to adulthood. An excellent and enjoyable read." --Deborah Carr, Professor of Sociology, Rutgers University, and editor of the Encyclopedia of the Life Course and Human Development. "The essays in this volume are written with great verve and intelligence, grounded in extensive fieldwork and careful data analysis." --Frank Furstenberg, Professor of Sociology in the Population Studies Center at the University of Pennsylvania

Latin America In Transition written by Sheldon Smith and has been published by Upa this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2003 with Business & Economics categories.

This book relies on a global studies (interdisciplinary) paradigm to study the basic transitions through which Latin America has gone over the last millennium. The global studies approach relies on an understanding of the distinct transitions through which cultures of Latin America have passed as they have adapted to global economic and political forces since the Sixteenth Century. Unlike dependency or world systems theories, a global studies paradigm does not accept the idea that cultures and peoples are passive to globalization or capitalism. This work shows that Latin American institutions can only be understood as embedded in Latin American culture, which is a product of history and adaptation, and has interacted with quite distinct global systems for the last five centuries. The book presents the case that, until very recently, the economic institutions of Latin America were not capitalistic, but either mercantilist or corporatist. Only since 1985 have Latin American countries adopted capitalism and democracy, and these have not been a failure. While this book stresses political and economic analyses, it also examines the impact of corporatism (state capitalism) on ecosystems, demographics, social systems, and cultural forms. The book is a largely upbeat and positive examination of the new phenomenon of globalization in Latin America.

"The first book about television and electoral politics in Latin America, Television, Politics, and the Transition to Democracy in Latin America summarizes the relationships of the media and politics in Latin America, discusses television's role in political change throughout the world, and assesses the history of broadcast media and politics in Latin America." "Case studies on the 1988 Chilean plebiscite that decided that free elections would be resumed and on three presidential campaigns - Mexico 1988, Brazil 1989, and Argentina 1989 - illustrate television as the most important medium of political information and the most powerful communications instrument in political campaigns." "Twelve media analysts from the United States and Latin America examine the power and limitations of television in the new democratic era, drawing on new public opinion data, viewer surveys, and content analysis to interpret a subject too often investigated only through anecdote or impression. With the return to democracy, the ways in which public opinion is formed, measured, and reported will be crucial in determining whether democracy succeeds or fails."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc.
