Between 1600 and 1750 Ottoman Turkish music differentiated itself from an older Persianate art music and developed the genres antecedent to modern Turkish art music. Based on a translation of Demetrius Cantemir’s seminal “Book of the Science of Music” from the early eighteenth century, this work is the first to bring together contemporaneous notations, musical treatises, literary sources, travellers’ accounts and iconography. These present a synthetic picture of the emergence of Ottoman composed and improvised instrumental music. A detailed comparison of items in the notated Collections of Cantemir and of Bobowski—from fifty years earlier—together with relevant treatises, reveal key aspects of modality, melodic progression and rhythmic structures.

Before the time of Napoleon, the most ambitious effort to explore and map the Nile was undertaken by the Ottomans, as attested by two monumental documents: an elaborate map, with 475 rubrics, and a lengthy travel account. Both were achieved at about the same time—c. 1685—and both by the same man. Evliya Çelebi’s account of his Nile journeys, in the tenth volume of his Book of Travels (Seyahatname), has been known to the scholarly world since 1938, when that volume was first published. The map, held in the Vatican Library, has been studied since at least 1949. Numerous new critical editions of both the map and the text have been published over the years, each expounding upon the last in an attempt to reach a definitive version. The Ottoman Explorations of the Nile provides a more accurate translation of the original travel account. Furthermore, the maps themselves are reproduced in greater detail and vivid color, and there are more cross-references to the text than in any previous edition. This volume gives equal weight and attention to the two parts that make up this extraordinary historical document, allowing readers to study the map or the text independently, while also using each to elucidate and accentuate the details of the other.

From Sarajevo to Damascus, coffee was drunk from the same kinds of cups, while everywhere, people received their friends seated on raised platforms decked out with rugs and cushions. Moreover the slow and therefore less obvious changes in material culture often had a more profound impact on people''s lives than short-term and more ''noisy'' political conflicts. The transition of the Ottomans from the world of early modern statehood toward modernity was backed up by multiple transformations in the everyday lives of many men and women. Overall, the urban populations of the empire from the sixteenth century onwards developed an increasing degree of sophistication and differentiation in their ways of living. People found new ways of enjoying their food, putting together their domestic environments or presenting themselves in public. During the last few decades the various remnants of Ottoman material life have attracted growing public attention. Ottoman cuisine and vernacular architecture are cherished not only by experts, but also by Turkish urban dwellers increasingly proud of their cultural heritage, to say nothing of tourists. But even so, serious research in these matters has been slow to develop. It is the aim of the present volume to show what avenues research has taken to date, point out the numerous unexploited or under-exploited primary sources and thus to advance our understanding of this important aspect of Ottoman history.
