This book is another high-calibre volume in IMAGES’ acclaimed Master Architect Series of monographs. The Architecture of Adrian Smith, SOM: Toward a Sustainable Future showcases a body of work that has made a significant contribution to contemporary world architecture. Adrian Smith has brought design solutions with enduring value to the entire planet. He’s designed buildings in China, England, Germany, Brazil, Kuwait, Canada, Korea, Guatemala, Bahrain, Japan, Saudi Arabia, Dubai and the United States. His expertise covers areas as broad as operations, marketing, finance, and professional services. He is truly one of the few architectural polymaths, a person who has a great diversity of skills and immense intellect. Smith is perhaps most recognized for designing exceptionally aesthetic and functional tall buildings. He understands scale, community, and context as few others do. He is passionate about (and celebrates) well- designed buildings of all shapes and sizes, and has earned accolades for designing the tallest building in the world. Some of Smith’s most renowned works include Banco De Occidente, United Gulf Bank, Rowes Wharf, 10 Ludgate, Jin Mao Tower, Burj Dubai, and Pearl River. When it comes to important buildings, Adrian Smith and SOM have provided us a beacon by which to steer. In these richly illustrated pages, Adrian Smith illuminates, showing us how to engage, energize, and inspire students, architects, and clients to do and to be their very best.

The book of global cultural work includes building designs from Chicago to Istanbul, Astana to Dubai and features both photography of built spaces and unbuilt ideas. In this book Adrian Smith + Gordon Gill Architecture reviews projects to answer questions that relate to how buildings can be used to enhance the experiences of the users beyond set programmatic requirements by asking questions like: How can architecture and design help advance the technologies, the operations, the program, and the way buildings perform? At a more sensorial and experiential level, the book explores how architecture can speak to the soul to create a place in between the art and the audience.

Excerpt: Oscar Ribeiro de Almeida Niemeyer Soares Filho (December 15, 1907) is a Brazilian architect specialized in international modern architecture. In the 1940s, '50s and '60s "he established himself as one of Modernism's greatest luminaries, while reshaping Brazil's identity in the popular imagination and mesmerizing architects around the globe." He is a pioneer in exploring the formal constructive possibilities of reinforced concrete for its aesthetic impact. He is currently 104 years old and still working. Niemeyer is famous for his use of abstract forms and curves that specifically characterize most of his work. A close colaboration with talented engineers, such as Joaquim Cardoso and Emilio Baumgart, allowed him to design and build curved architecture through his revolutionary use of concrete. His designs are daring, mixing innovation and courage, plastic freedom and invention. His buildings are often characterized by being spacious and exposed, mixing volumes and empty space to create unconventional patterns and often propped up by piloti. His work with concrete is described as elegant and harmonious. Some critics argue that Niemeyer was able to connect the baroque, which characterized part of the Portuguese architectural legacy in Brazil, with the international style, leading to the first succesfull regionalization of the new modernist movement Both lauded and criticized for being a "sculptor of monuments," he has been praised for being a great artist and one of the greatest architects of his generation by his supporters. He claims his architecture was strongly...
