This study investigates the acoustical components of music and the resultant design of architecture to discover how sound and space can be unified through the creative process. The disparity that can exist between architectural design and musical composition due to the abundance of architectural and musical work can be bridged by selecting a single piece of music and performing it in a specific space: the design of the space will be tuned to the music and the musical composition will shape the space. In this study, the use of the acoustical basis of music theory, composition, instrumental acoustics, acoustical design, acoustical material research, and architectural design, as well as subjective perception analysis, culminates in the temporary installation of a full scale architectural intervention suitable for intimate performances to a small audience. The architectural and acoustical design of the installation enhances the musical performance just as the musical selection and arrangement relies on the space by employing a holistic and interdisciplinary approach to the design process. The built realization of the design and the live musical performance within the space provides in the truest measure of the space and sound through experience.

In early June 2006, a group of over one hundred artists and researchers met for a three-day conference in the Architecture Building at Ryerson University in Toronto, Canada, to discussâe"from as many different viewpoints as possibleâe"the varying relationships between sound and space. This conference was part of soundaXis, a city-wide festival involving most of Torontoâe(tm)s new music community and organised by the Toronto Coalition of New Music Presenters. Out of the lively discussions at this conference, two primary themes emerged: the fraught condition of the relationship between sound as space, and the problematic role of representation and its twin, translation, in any discussion of this relationship. This book presents thirteen essays taken from the conference which address one, or both, of these primary themes. In addition, seven graphic essays have been included which present projects in which architects explicitly take on sound as a generating material in their designs. The resulting chapters in the book provide a diverse and, hopefully, provocative collection of ideas and images. They are meant not so much as a comprehensive study of the sound|space nexusâe"such a study may not actually be possibleâe"but as a place to begin the discussion.

Research in the creative fields of architecture, design, music and the arts has experienced dynamic development for over two decades. The research in these practice- and arts-based fields has become increasingly mature but has also led to various discussions on what constitutes doctoral proficiency in these fields. The term ‘doctorateness’ is often used when referring to the assessment of the production of doctoral research and the research competence of research students, but in architecture and the arts, the concept of doctorateness has not yet attained a clearly articulated definition. The assessment of quality has been practiced by way of supervising, mentoring and the evaluation of dissertations but much less discussed. This book offers perspectives on how to qualify and assess research in architecture, music and the arts. It creates a broader arena for discussion on doctorateness by establishing a framework for its application to creative fields. The book is grouped into three sections and includes contributions from international experts in the various fields working in Australia, Belgium, Brazil, Canada, Norway, Sweden, Switzerland, Spain, the Netherlands and the UK. The first section offers general frameworks for further conceptualising doctorateness in the fields in question. It is followed by a section that describes and discusses various experiences, concerns and visions on the production and assessment of doctoral research reporting from doctoral programmes in different stages of development. The third section includes future-oriented perspectives on knowledge-building processes, and asks how the ongoing, profound changes in academia could influence the concept of quality in both doctoral process and product. The book presents different perspectives on research assessment practices and developments of relevant criteria in the practice-based and creative fields of architecture and the arts. The contributions propose ways of framing this issue conceptually, show the need for awareness of the specific context and tradition programmes develop and give proposals for various potential trajectories for the future.
