The New Zealand architect Roger Walker has contributed significantly to the development of New Zealand architecture. He believes that building can make people happy and a good building adds to what nature has given humankind. Walker says that “We have a duty to build well. Our perception of cultural meaning and hence part of the pleasure of being is tied up in how we make our places”. It has been said that his creativity could lead him into another direction than architecture but he has devoted much of his time developing his architecture. Walker argued that he loved what he is doing. He has loved building things from the time he built model aeroplanes as a kid.

The New Zealand architect Roger Walker (b.1942) is one of the few architects who has created a new style which has affected the establishment and evolution of a New Zealand architectural identity. Walker was born when modern movement architecture started to appear in New Zealand, he studied architecture when modern architecture reached maturity and the theories of post-modern architecture were being formulated, and he began to practice as post-modernism began its initial development. During his growing practice Roger Walker has significantly developed his personal architectural style and has contributed to an emerging concept of regional architecture and strengthened the notion of New Zealand architectural identity.

The new edition of this popular, well-established textbook addresses the expanding role of the pharmacist in treating patients. It covers treatment of common diseases as well as other medical, therapeutic and patient related issues. Written by both pharmacists and clinicians to reflect a team approach, it offers an in-depth analysis of drug therapy in the treatment of disease, relying on input from the pharmacist as a member of the "team" in hospital and community settings. Information is easy to locate in a logical format organized primarily by systems and disorders. A logical organization and format for each chapter provides consistent features including key points, epidemiology, aetiology, disease, clinical manifestations, investigations and treatment, drugs used in treatment. Convenient tables and boxes highlight supplementary information in the text such as risk factors and dietary guidelines. All chapters close with an "evidence-based practice" box and case studies that solidify applications of chapter content. More up-to-date information is provided on: "rational" antibiotic prescribing and the institution of policies; advances in therapy for chronic renal failure and transplants; changes in asthma treatment; and new drugs for epilepsy and Parkinson's. The neurology section has been expanded to include a new chapter on multiple sclerosis, dementia and Alzheimer's disease, and treatment. More information has been added related to infertility treatment and menopause. New two-color illustrations make the text more readable and accessible. A greater emphasis on treatment of the patient rather than the diagnosis reflects a shift in focus toward patient-centered care.

One of the important themes that have dominated the architectural scene during the last 30 years is the question of regional identity, and the question of New Zealand identity in specific. Traditionally, architectural discourse has been largely concerned with form. It has been dominated by disputes that turn around questions of style. Although architects have been looking overseas for new ideas and models from Europe and America, many architects recognised that the creation of a New Zealand style was a priority. Many New Zealand architects’ buildings embody and express cultural and social meanings, which relate them to the wider New Zealand context. Among these architects, Roger Walker and Ian Athfield, whos styles offer a potentially rich field for the discussion of New Zealand identity.

For more than fifty years, the Architectural Centre has helped shape the possibilities of modern life in urban New Zealand and profoundly influenced the remaking of Wellington. In 1946 a group of students and idealists got together to realise their visions for a modern city. Over the following half century, the Architectural Centre they founded helped to shape the possibilities of modern life in urban New Zealand and profoundly influenced the remaking of Wellington. More than just an association of architects, the Centre wrote manifestos, furthered education, published a magazine - Design Review - hosted modernist exhibitions in its gallery, staged an audacious campaign for political influence called 'the Project' and fought for better planning, better design, better built environments in Wellington. Its members also built a demonstration house, but 'planning was the battle-cry'. Charting these activists and their projects over the years, Julia Gatley and Paul Walker in Vertical Living also offer a history of urban Wellington from the 1940s to the 1990s and beyond. The book reminds us that, in modernist ideology, architecture and urban planning went hand-in-hand with visual and craft arts, graphic and industrial design. In recovering the multi-disciplinary history, politics and planning of the Architectural Centre, Gatley and Walker begin writing the city back into the history of architecture in this country.
