Join the author as he examines what it is to be Armenian in an entirely non Armenian world exploring the alienation of being different. " I am sure all Armenians will want to read Michael Boyajian's book for two reasons: first, their interest in their identity; and secondly, in an era of heightened research in the multiplicity of our ethnic origins and certainly awareness of DNA which has given us a desire to address a question posed by the author: Whatt is he (or she)?"--Gary A. From genocide, forced displacement, and emigration, to the gradual establishment of sedentary and rooted global communities, how has the Armenian diaspora formed and maintained a sense of collective identity? This book explores the richness and magnitude of the Armenian experience through the 20th century to examine how Armenian diaspora elites and their institutions emerged in the post-genocide period and used “stateless power” to compose forms of social discipline. Historians, cultural theorists, literary critics, sociologists, political scientists, and anthropologists explore how national and transnational institutions were built in far-flung sites from Istanbul, Aleppo, Beirut and Jerusalem to Paris, Los Angeles, and the American mid-west. Exploring literary and cultural production as well as the role of religious institutions, the book probes the history and experience of the Armenian diaspora through the long 20th century, from the role of the fin-de-siècle émigré Armenian press to the experience of Syrian-Armenian asylum seekers in the 21st century. It shows that a diaspora's statelessness can not only be evidence of its power, but also how this “stateless power” acts as an alternative and complement to the nation-state.

This book explores and comparatively assesses how Armenians as minorities have been represented in modern Turkey from the twentieth century through to the present day, with a particular focus on the period since the first electoral victory of the AKP (Justice and Development Party) in 2002. It examines how social movements led by intellectuals and activists have challenged the Turkish state and called for democratization, and explores key issues related to Armenian identity. Drawing on new social movements theory, this book sheds light on the dynamics of minority identity politics in contemporary Turkey and highlights the importance of political protest.

Armenian Christianity Today examines contemporary religious life and the social, political, and cultural functions of religion in the post-Soviet Republic of Armenia and in the Armenian Diaspora worldwide. Scholars from a range of countries and disciplines explore current trends and everyday religiosity, particularly within the Armenian Apostolic Church (AAC), and amongst Armenian Catholics, Protestants and vernacular religions. Themes examined include: Armenian grass-roots religiosity; the changing forms of regular worship and devotion; various types of congregational life; and the dynamics of social composition of both the clergy and lay believers. Exploring through the lens of Armenia, this book considers wider implications of ‘postsecular’ trends in the role of global religion.

The Armenian Experience written by Gaïdz Minassian and has been published by Bloomsbury Publishing this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2020-05-14 with Political Science categories.

Armenian national identity has long been associated with what has come to be known as the Armenian Genocide of 1915. Immersing the reader in the history, culture and politics of Armenia – from its foundations as the ancient kingdom of Urartu to the modern-day Republic – Gaïdz Minassian moves past the massacres embedded in the Armenian psyche to position the nation within contemporary global politics. An in-depth study of history and memory, The Armenian Experience examines the characteristics and sentiments of a national identity that spans the globe. Armenia lies in the heart of the Caucasus and once had an empire – under the rule of Tigranes the Great in the first century BC – that stretched from the Caspian to the Mediterranean seas. Beginning with an overview of Armenia's historic position at the crossroads between Rome and Persia, Minassian details invasions from antiquity to modern times by Arabs, Mongols, Ottomans, Persians and Russians right up to its Soviet experience, and drawing on Armenia's post-Soviet conflict with Azerbaijan in its attempts to reunify with the disputed territory of Nagorno-Karabakh. This book questions an Armenian self-identity dominated by its past and instead looks towards the future. Gaïdz Minassian emphasises the need to recognise that the Armenian story began well before the Genocide 1915, and continues as an on-going modern narrative.

The Armenian Diaspora is a case study of the Armenian diaspora in Manchester, England. This study examines the complex social and political processes at play that maintain and shape Armenian identity. Professor Aghanian uses a comparative analysis in order to understand other Armenian communities throughout the world and other self-defined diaspora groups, locating similarities and differences between the various groups. Professor Aghanian introduces the study by her definition of diaspora and an examination of classic and contemporary theories of ethnicity while she outlines how we construct our sense of identity in different settings. The tone of the study lends itself to a narration of the long, rich, and often traumatic history of the Armenian people: their adoption of Christianity; the rise of Armenian nationalism; the dispersion of the Armenians throughout the world; and their eventual independence. The outcome of the study is a close look at how Armenians successfully balance lives rooted in a particular territory while sharing very different cultural and social spaces. Their experience emphasizes their ability to combine resources and networks from multiple locations (transnationally) in order to maximize their freedom and independence from the confines of any nation. Ethnic consciousness is experienced in a variety of ways, nevertheless, wherever and however they are living they feel Armenian.

This collection of essays, originally presented at a conference on Armenian identity held at UC Irvine, span a period between the ancient and the present and indicate the continuing relevance of the broad and complex concept and study of identity. The chapters express different interpretations and contexts of Armenian identity and demonstrate the multiple ways of approaching it. Thus, the collection as a whole is also a reflection of historiographical developments and directions.
